Not much on search for the 300 savage. I have been going through all my empty brass. Sizing/trimming/primers. On the bench right now are about 130 completed 300 savage cases. 100 hornady 150gr flat base spitzers, 1lb of varget for the powder measure. When you open the new lyman book, this bullet is listed with varget as the most accurate at a lightly compressed 42gr. Same as the max load in the nosler book for the 150gr. My crono data shows it just under 2700fps. In my old 300 that i gave to my stepson with scope. The current 300 is open sight

The 300 Savage is a great round for deer hunting.
The old Remington 150 gr SPCL was perfect for the 300 Savage and deadly on deer.

The new Nosler 150 gr BST (30-30) would be a great pick too.

As to max loads for the 300 Savage it all depends on what rifle you are shooting them in. If the Savage lever guns then the loads should be on the mild side. If it is a good bolt rifle then you can load it up pretty good. I shoot what is called a 30X47 (HBR) Hunter Bench Rest wildcat that is made by taking the 300 Savage case and pushing the shoulder back 10 thousands but leaving the OAL of the case the same. It makes a longer neck for the case. I load 42 grs IMR 4895 (all you can get into a case) with 125 gr Nosler BT's for 2850 fps and the same 42 grs IMR 4895 for 150 gr bullets for 2650 fps. I load 41 grs Varget with 168 Sierra Match Kings for 2600 fps. The rifle is a Ruger 77. If you can hold it this rifle will put them ALL in the same hole at 100 yards. I have killed a number of deer with it also. The 125 Nosler BT is like a death ray on deer. Bang Flop.

the 125gr ballistic tip is a great bullet for the scoped 300 savage. worked up 3 different powders for it in the old 300. 1 1/2" groups at 2950fps is what it shoots. Kills deer very well. I miss the old 300. The one i'm using now is a mid 50's that came out of the back of my neighbors uncles closet when he passed. I doubt it had a 20rd box shot through it. Time to bang it up.

Wow. Put some pics of that up. I like that 300 Savage. Really neat round and in a nice bolt gun or lever gun would be a neat whitetail rifle. Scotty

Is this a Savage 99?

I've got one I picked up for a song and a dance that spent alot of time in a truck or a tractor.
Has some rust, little bluing left and may have a cracked wrist in the rear stock but man oh man the old girl shoots! With the 150 Rem Core-lokts it's a serious .75 inch rifle wearing an old 1.5x4x20 Weaver in Pachmayer tip off mounts. S/N dates the rifle to 1951 (if I remember correctly)

I've also got a Rem Mdl 81 in 300 Savage that dad bought in the 60s that hasn't had three 20 round boxes run through it since new.

As if I don't have enough reloading projects on the bench I NOW have another one.

I had great luck with Hornadies 150 gr and Win 748 or IMR 4064. Came close to 308 win velocities.

Yes they are both model 99's from the mid 50's. one with factory drill/tap, one without. I still load for the scoped rifle just not often.

The 300 savage is a very popular gun/round in Maine. Alot of the oldtimers still swear by this caliber. Plus the gun just plain looks cool. My boss still hunts with his 300 he's had for 50 some odd years. He recently put a scope on it, he couldn't see the front sight threw the peep any longer. I'd love to get my hands on one!

I spent alot of time looking over the used gun racks while I was at Kittery trying to find that M99 300 Sav I wanted. I kinda came up empty handed, but eventually, I think I will find a decent one that will come home with me. My grandpa hunted with one for a long time and never had any issues. It was the 300 to have back in its day! Scotty

300 savage model 99 prices here are hundreds of dollars less than what you would see in the east. I traded for the open sighted 300. a savage 110 in 300 win mag straight across. A rifle i valued at $300-$325. it has been collecting dust in my safe long enough. Time to get it dirty, put some dings in it. I have a bunch of practice ammo loaded and a pile of 9" paper plates to punch holes in. The deer tag i applied for this year is perfect for the 300. lodgepole thickets and oldgrowth fir with some manzanita patches. Long shots will be under 150yds, so with practice the 300 should get it done.

I do have some 150gr partitions with crimp groove that i was going to use. But to use the crimp groove on them, the OAL was .050-.065" to long for the magazine. That and my 308 is sighted in with them. I looked in the lyman number 49 and chose the hornady 150gr #3031 because lyman worked the load up for the model 99. If my local bimart had the sierra 180gr #2170 i would have bought them. At the range i can use open sights, Even the hornady 130gr #3020 was on my list.

150gr at about 2650 Is what factory ammo cronographs. Remington averages 2642fps for 150gr, 2280 for 180gr. If you shoot a 150gr Partition at 2700fps, it drops below 1900fps just beyond 350yds. Sounds like a great bullet for the 300 savage.

Seems like the 150gt PT would be just about perfect for everything you would ever you the Savage on. I know it would be my first pick. Scotty

Scotty, that's the first bullet I'm gonna try when I start loading for my .300, then the 165 Partition.

What I'm trying to find is a relatively unobtrusive receiver sight for a 99.

Here she is.

The 99 photo looks exactly like mine right down to the leather sling. twins
