Fellas,

Well i got to do some shooting to day even though it was freezing this morning. I made a large group of various loads last night for my 300 UM.
I was able to shoot about 40 rounds before my scope broke. I am using a Nikon monarch scope, the complete elevation turret assembly came loose from the turret cam threads. I have never seen this kind of problem with a scope before. I will of course report how Nikon solves the problem and their willingness to do so. but without further ado the range results.

Remington 700, 300 Ultra Mag 26" barrel
40 degrees 30% humidity 20 mph wind 100 yds

190gr Matchking 88gr IMR 7828 4.153" w/LNL comp Ave 3118fps 16.53SD
.91" group

same as above with 90.6gr 7828 Ave 3202 fps 19.84 SD 1" groups

200gr Matchking 87.5gr IMR 7828 4.156" w/LNL comp ave 3104 FPS 12.42 SD 1" groups

same as above 89gr 7828 3114 FPS 30 SD 1" groups

I do believe these loads would shoot way better if not for the wind and my disregard of it. Also i wasn't shooting my best. This rifle was amazingly easy to shoot, no huge recoil or punishment at all no joking the recoil pad is fantastic.I would post pics but apparently black labs enjoy an occasional snack on cameras.

I see your in Ft Worth, Was this shooting at the Fort Worth gun club or out at Alpine Range? I used to shoot at both of these and miss being close enough to go there to shoot. Nice report too by the way. I had a 300 RUM and it didn't seem to have that bad of a recoil either.

Sorry about the scope. I guess it can happen with the best. I'm always interested in 30 caliber rifles. I didn't get the 300 RUM but I got all around it. Did you get the SPS or XCR rifle?

Sorry to hear about your scope.

Take a look at the Leupold VX III and mark 4 in 4.5x14. Very robust with a lifetime warranty. They will stand up to the RUM recoil.

JDMAG,

I was at alpine i normally go there but dang they get busy. That is one advantage of freezing weather i pretty much had the range to myself.I really didn't notice the scope problem because the groups were shooting right were its should be for a 200 yard zero at 100 yards. After so many rounds i decided to adjust to bulls eye and then i noticed a loose turret. This was on a regular everyday SPS . I was quite surprised but to be honest luckily i have never had a bad shooting 700. I also must say the the matchkings were .01 of the grooves and were way to long for magazine loading and i mean way to long. All of the loads i made would undoubtedly be over pressure in higher temps. I now know exactly where the 300 UM fits in my battery of firearms.I would say i wouldn't use bullets less than 180 grains for anything unless it was 400+ distance on animals. this cartridge really is everything it was designed to be and then some. The problem with this cartridge is that not only is it more efficient with lots of powder and heavy bullets but lighter bullets create velocity that exceeds bullet construction and design velocity. I used some lighter (150-165) Nosler and Hornady bullets earlier and noticed some inconsistency so this rifle will be using 180-220 weight bullets. The Sierra manual was spot on in velocity. Some of the data books use 24" barrels for test i would say that would be robbing this cartridge of some potential. This round is best served with 26"-30" barrels and really 28" being the starting point. I will be looking into a leupy but i really have become a Nikon believer in the last few years. I guess there isn't a thing man can build that cant brake. JD338 the VX III 4.5x14 looks like a real winner. Huge adjustment range on the leupold VX III 4.5x14x50 30mm.

I liked alpine when I lived there in Arlington. I had a friend who was a member of the Ft Worth gun club. It was a good place to shoot also. Is it still there? It did have a 400 yard range I think. Does Alpine have anything over 100 yet?

The Leupold Mark 4 4.5x14PR is an awesome scope. 30mm tube and 40mm bell. I had the custom shop add M1 dials, had the scope back in 10 days.

She sits on my 700 LSS 338 RUM and gives 100% repeatability and no problem with recoil.

I was going to mount a nikon 4-12 monarch ucc on my 300 rum but maybe I will use my vari x iii 3.5-10 instead after hearing this

I had a Nikon Buckmaster on my 300 RUM and never had a problem with it, much less falling apart. My nephew has this gun now, and has said nothing about any problems. It will be interesting to hear what Nikon has to say.

fellas,

I really don't want to knock Nikon right now. I do have a Buckmaster scope on my 338 UM and have never had a problem. I trust Nikon right now But if they hassle or inconvenience me then as always that's the end of that. But we have all know scopes that broke . I even imagine U.S. optics and the like may have an occasional uh ooh. But really i do like to find out what a company's service or word is worth, i will say not this way but heck. I was actually able to stay really calm and thank god its not right before or during hunting season. I will keep everyone posted about this. I do know Leupold's word is worth gold. so if the situation isn't resolved to my liking they can keep the scope and i will again go back to Leupold or even look into a Bushnell elite 6500 i love the zoom range.

Sorry about the scope but atleast the 300 RUM is a shooter. Glad to see more and more people with the RUMs 8)
