Has anyone had success playing around with seating depth on a 300 weatherby to tighten groups?
I am currently seating to SAAMI recommended lengths - if I remember right when I tried to seat too long I had shell ejection issues.
But I'd love to hear any feedback I'm shooting 180gr bullets

For the weatherby I load for I usually load to Max magazine length. I then check to make sure it will eject a loaded round and if not shorten OAL until it will. What poweder and bullet are you shooting?

One of the issues with OAL in a Weatherby is the free bore (throat) that Weatherby builds into their chambers. I think you are on the right track. Load a bunch as long that will function in the rifle and then seat them in a little at a time. My STW was a 7mm B to start with. My magazine length is around 3.65 or so. To the lands is around 3.75 so I am already a long ways off. I started at 3.60 and hit paydirt at 3.550 for the 160 gr TSX. Thats my .02

thanks for the info -
the nosler manual describes a method of chambering a "dummy" round, with the bullet colored in marker, to find maximum seating depth - is this length the measurement to the lands? this didn't work for me with my weatherby - I assumed it was because it is free bored.

HI there,
I use 180 gr AB and partitions. 84.5 gr of 7828 and federal primers. Length is as long as the mag will allow, about 1/8 longer than specs. Groups are sub 1/2" at 100 yds.

Bob that is why! It probably does work but it gives you a length that can only be single loaded, start with the magazine length then crunch them down a bit at a time and you will find a good one.!!!

Same here. I have not had a lot of luck changing seating depth. Possibly due to the 3/8" freebore.
