.300 wby necked down to .7mm

Need some advice.
One of my close friends just bought a rifle. Sako action, .300 WBY cartridge necked down to 7mm. I know that wildcatters used to use this for long distance, and the person that he bought the rifle from hunted elk in Co with it.

I can go the standard route in working up a new load, chrono etc... But, was wondering if any of you have used this or have a pet load. The rifle came with 150 Gr BTs and 150 GR combined tech. I was wanting to use a 160 gr AB, just need some advice and starting point.

the loaded cartridges that he got seem about 100% packed. OALs are very consistent, but the rifle is shooting 1.5" groups. I will take the rifle to a smith, but still need to work the load.

You can use 7mmSTW data as a starting point, hardpan. The STW is a full length case, just like the 7mm-300Wby. The Weatherby will ultimately have more capacity by a smidge, but you can start with the STW data and work up carefully. If you have access to QuickLoad, you'll be all set. You might also search at the weatherby.dk forums and weatherbynation.com, as I know there are some 7mm-300Wby discussions on both forums.

I use the 160 AB and 160 TSX in my STW, Copious amounts of H-1000 and RL-19. My field tests on the TSX were less than stellar so I moved up to the 175 PT. It has a great bc and shoots very well in my rifle.
Ballistics a compairable to the 160 and it has more energy upon impact.


The bottom left and right targets were shot using H-1000 the right target is a 4 shot group at 118 yards.

Man, that 7/300 WBY should be a cool rifle fully loaded. I like them big 7's a bunch. Really about as nice shooting and powerful combo most of us guys need. Scotty

It appears to be in good shape, and the price isn't terrible. Probably could get it for something like $635-650, give or take.

Only trouble is, it's a Remmy. Being a Winnie snob might hinder your desires...

Yeah, I'm good with the Remington's. I'll stick to my old broke Winchesters from New Haven. I do like that 7 RUM though. What a speedster.
