Planning on working up a load with the either the 168gr. or 180gr. E-tip. Anyone have any favorite recipes out there they are willing to share?

I have been working on a few loads. I tried 4350 and 7828 with CCI 250 Primers. 150's, 168's and 180's.

The 150's and 180's were all over the place with both powders. .9-1.5"

However the 168 with the 4350 put three rounds (1 flier) in a dime with 68 grains, 4 rounds in a nickel at 71 grains and then opened back up at 74 grains.

I am going to be shooting, 68-68.5-69-69.5-70-70.5 to see if I can narrow down the sweet spot.

I ordered a Lead Sled that night, since 60, 300 Weatherby Mag rounds start to hurt after a while...

I also ordered a Chronograph, So I can give you better numbers. Going to try H4831SC As well.

Good Luck!

I would highly suggest using 180 gr (conventional bullet) data and working up. Try rl25, retumbo, IMR 7828 and such.

Dan,

I have had outstanding results with IMR 7828 SSC and RL-22. As always start low and work up slowly.

I would be very cautious of the load listed in the previous post. The suggestion of 84.0 grains of RL-22 is 4.0 grains over the listed maximum for conventional bullets. The E-Tip is not conventional. In order to reach the weight of 180 grains and containing no lead the bullet is longer. The longer bullet has more surface contact with the bore and generates higher pressure. The mid-range load of 78.0 grains of RL-22 should be considered the maximum for the 180 E-Tip.

Each rifle is different. As with every new load development and new rifle use extra caution.

Thanks for the replies guys, I do appreciate it.

A little more info here...

The rifle I am going to be working with is a Weatherby Vanguard with a 24" barrel. I also hunt here in CA where the weather can go from 95+ down to the teens, so finding the RIGHT powder and getting good velocity are what I am looking for here. I know that the E-tips have a long bearing surface and you must be cautious in your load development so I thought I might a glean a bit of insight from some folks here.

Dan, we've talked about this offline a bit, but I thought I'd chime in here, as well. (Since I'm waiting on the charcoal to get right for the smoker so I can put birds on for a late Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow.)

I've tried the E-Tips in a Mark V Stainless Synthetic, and they produce good velocities in the 3100-3200fps range from the Remington brass I'm using. I suspect with Weatherby/Norma brass one could get another 30-60fps out of the extra case capacity. But, with the Remmy brass, Fed215 primers, and 180gr E-Tips, I've had the best results using IMR7828. I'm going to try RL22 and H1000 with this combo, as I've had some luck with H1000 under some 180gr Hornady SST's in this same rifle. My concern with the Remmy brass is capacity with H1000, since I tried it once before but got compressed loads with the starting load listed in Nosler's manual, and the "mid" load was pushing bullets out a tad after seating, so it was scrapped. I may pick up a couple of boxes of Weatherby brass to try the H1000 in, even. Along the lines of my recommendation to you, I'm also thinking of trying out some RL25, based on the Lyman data (that is on it's way to you shortly - thanks for the email address).

My experience with E-Tips in multiple cartridges has been to move to the slowest powder you can pack in the case, and seat them a bit farther off the lands (even in Weatherby rounds) than you normally would. JD338 has had good luck with deeper seating, as well.

I'm anxious to hear how these work for you and what combinations perform. I'm still wanting to use them in the 300Wby I've got hanging around, but I've found a consistent sub-1" load with the SST's so for now, it's the winner. I know that's not an option for you in CA, so I'm anxious to see how the E-Tips work for you.

1.3"???? I am hitting a .3" group on the work up... Might want to consider golf? ;)

That was the only group I fired so far, but the rifle is shooting sub MOA with other bullets. Would like to see your .3" group though ;)

I have not used the E-tip, but I tried the 168 gr TSX with RP 300 Wby brass. 84.5 gr of IMR 7828 SSC gave me tiny groups and chrono'd 3310 fps. I think the E-Tip may give higher pressures with the same load as the TSX so start lower. As for heavier bullets, RL 25 has been my best accuracy and speed in the 300 Wby. My rifle is a Model 70 with a 26 inch tube and seems to take lighter loads than a true Wby.
