I just purchased a 300 win mag. I have been thinking of trying the Barnes Tipped TSX bullets. Does anyone have any load data available for this combination of 180gr. bullet with RL-22 or IMR-4350?
I'm also curious about the accuracy of these.
What about extended range bullet ? (MRX?)
I've had good performance from the accubonds in my 30/06, but am impressed with what I've see with the regular TSX. Thanks! CJ

CJ,

Good to have you on board. Where in Kansas are you located? Southeast Kansas was my home for the first 20 years of my life. I am quite proud of my roots.

The current Barnes Manual recommends for the 180 grain TSX a maximum load of 69.0 grains of IMR4350 and a maximum load of 73.0 grains of RL22. The data for the TTSX should be comparable. There is no question but that the TSX can give good performance on game. I've certainly used them on moose and elk from my 300 WSM, and they worked quite well. I should imagine that the TTSX would work equally well. Since you have had good performance with the AB in the 30-06, I would think that you will be pleased if you choose to same bullet in the 300 WM.

All rifles are different and there is no sure fire way to tell what your gun will like. However I reload for 8 different 300 win mags and have always found the load listed in the Nosler manual as "the most accurate powder tested" of 75.5 gr RL22 to work well in all of them. It will give velocities close to 3100 fps in most guns depending upon how far off the lands you are seating your bullets.

However the 200 gr Accubonds are an excellent bullet although they are considerably slower in the 300 win mag

Welcome to the forum. The 300 Win Mag is a terrific round capable of excellent accuracy and a lot of down range power. I have loaded the following load in 3 different rifles with sub MOA accuracy.

300 Win Mag
180 gr PT
75.0 grs RL 22
W-W case
Federal GM215M primer

The 180 gr AB would make for a flatter shooter with more retained energy down range due to the higher BC. Woods is right, go to the 200 gr AB and you will have a long range hammer.

The 300 Win Mag is my all time favorte cartridge. At one time I owned two rifle chambered for it. One was an AIII Sako that I sold with deep regret and the other which is probably in need of a new barrel is the Model 70 Laredo LRH. I used H1000 exclusively but when I started loading the excellent 180 grains Barnes TSX, I switched to IMR 7828. The accurcy of the 300 is phenominal. This cartridge shoots well when loaded to near maximum.

Dr. Mike, I'm sure I will be pleased with the accubonds, but would like to try something else. I just like developing new loads and playing in the off season. By the way, I spent the first 25 years in North Central Kansas about an hour North West of Salina and now am in Eastern Kansas.

Woods, What grain bullet were you referring to with 75.5gr RL-22? 180?

One more question I have is I have heard RL-22 is fairly sensitive to temperature changes. What do you guys who have experience with that powder think?

Thanks to all. Chris

I use RL 22 in 257 Roberts, 280 AI and 338 RUM and have never really noticed much difference than any other powder. I did one time get a hot lot and had to back off a couple grains during the summer months.

I heard that IMR7828 gives good vel. in 180gr, but esp. 200 gr. Did you find this to be true?

Yes its true IMR-7828 pushes 200 grainers nice and fast. My 700 rem. loves this combo. I load the Partition long and strong and pad the shoulder. :) :)

Not in my case. Actually I get higher velocity from H1000 but my rifle likes the 7828 and TSX combination.
