Ok, new to reloading and very recently purchased a Tikka3 .300 WSM 24" stainless barrel.

Have been reloading for the past month of so with RL-19 and recenlty RL-17 exclusively. Have to say the RL-17 performs very well with lower weights. A couple weeks ago, shot a 4 shot group .878" at 200 yards with RL-17 64.5 with 168gr BT 3050FPS. Trouble is, it was the last of the 168 I had and the last in stock anywhere locally. Sure, I can purchase online but was looking for an alternative for local purchases. I switched to the 165gr AB and recently purchased 165gr BT because the ballistics match the AB but much cheaper for target shooting. Since my move, I have yet to shoot consistant shot groups with the 165s. Can shoot 3 shot 2" groups but always seems to throw one of the three outside that group by more than 2".

Here are my findings with RL-17 165gr BT at 200 yards.
65.5 gr 3073 fps shot 4 shot group 2" threw two additional shots outside by 2"
66.0 gr 3110 fps shot 4 shot group 1.7" group but threw the 5th one plus 2" out
66.5 gr 3173 fps 3 shot group, 2 in same hole, third shot low and left by 3"

The reason for the inconsitant qty for testing is based upon what I had loaded the week before for testing. Decided 3-5 shot groups for testing depending upon accuracy.
Using benchrest and manual trigger pull. So, this may be the reason for the thrown shots.

I have seen many recommendations to move to the 180gr Partition for a flatter more consistant trajectory. Any thoughts on the above or the 180's?
Would love to hear from anyone else using the RL17 or comparing the RL-17 to another powder for performance.
Moving from a 168gr to a 165gr require more or less powder or is the change insignificant for slight change in weight?

Will be testing more next week, will post the results.

......................................................Been using RL17 for awhile in my 300 WSM Ruger Frontier carbine, which has performed as advertised. Not using the same bullets you are using, but do load the 168 gr Berger hunting VLD and other VLD weights. I prefer my hogs and elk to be DRT as much as possible which reduces my tracking time.

66.5 gr RL17 gives me 3032-3040 fps on average from the 16.5 barrel; moa and under @ 100 yards with no pressure signs using the 168 VLD. Generally, you will find "after" you work up the load, you can use the same charge for a 168 as for a 165....66.5 gr RL17 averages 2983 fps with a 175 gr VLD.

Also! Keep your eye out for Hodgdon`s new Superperformance powder after the first of the year. 165 gr @ 3274 fps (max loading from a 24" barrel), is now posted on the Hodgdon site in their reloading data section. That is better than Alliant`s 165 gr specs using RL17.

If things go as expected using this new hi-tech Superperformance powder (like I need more speed, but still curious anyway), 3100 fps may be very possible with good accuracy using a 168 VLD from my quick `n handy shorty tubed powerhouse, whereas your Tikka could very well approach 3300 using a 165.

Smokin!

According to Hodgdon whom I called, only certain cartridges which are listed on the Hodgdon site using this new powder (including the 300 WSM), gave the best velocity increases vs all other Hodgdon and IMR powders.

Thanks for the info.

Ok, worked on this for a while the other day and mapped the lands. I have loaded up five rounds each 64.0.64.5/65.0 and set the depth .010 off the lands. Unfortunatly, these rounds will not fit in my magazine and will have to hand load each. Verified length in chamber. I think this will improve my overall group and think the powder charge should be near perfect in this range. Seeing how i was getting 3010fps at 65.0gr - 165gr Nosler BT with 24" barrel measured at 10'. These where set .070 off the lands. Ill post the results. Scheduled for the range tomorrow.

Now that's interesting... Lots of velocity there, right up with the .300 Win mag.

Here is my results from this mornings shoot.
Powder/Bullet/FPS
64.0-165 BT-2980
64.5-165 BT-2985
65.0-165 BT-3025

My Tikka3 seems to like loads around 2085 fps regardless of bullet weight. I plotted all shots today within 2065-2095fps at 200 yards. All but one fit in a 3" circle. Ill post for view.

Here is my shot plot. Target is represented at 3" on one inch grid. Distance 200 yards. Weather 49 degrees, elevation 2200 ft, humidity 80%. Nosler 165 gr BT, RL-17@64.0/64.5. Avg 2985 FPS bullet (-.010) off lands.

All shots where shot with bench rest and manual trigger.

Next week, will adjust to (-005) off lands with 64.0/64.3/64.5 test loads. This time with solid base bench rest and hydro trigger. Oh yea, and drop the scope about 3.5 inches at 200 yards.
