working on load development on sat. and put up the oehler. started with 98gr retumbo and worked up to 105, at 105 had sticky extraction and loose primer pockets. found best load at 101 but decided to run 3 of the 105's through the screens, printer looked like this:

1-3720
2-3692
3-3706

can this be right?? barrel is #18 light varmint krieger.

Just looking at the Retumbo data, that looks really fast. I would have expected around 3500 or so. How long is your barrel? Scotty

That does seem to be screaming.. What is your load running at 101gr's? That should just about be a laser with a 165. Is it your deer rifle or do you have other plans for it? Scotty

just got it back from gunsmith. deer rifle (but not with 165 ballistic tips;) last i used the chrono was my m77v 25-06 everything was up to par 100bst at 3300fps.

Maybe it is right. That does seem mighty fast. Either way, I would imagine your 101gr load is pretty quick as well. What bullets are you going to use to hunt with? I imagine something pretty tough to stand up to those speeds. Scotty

Normal loads for the 300 Rum with 26" tube run about.....

200 3100 fps
180 3300 fps
165 3400 fps.

It is easy to get fooled with pressures in the 300 RUM do to its real tough brass. People are usually running 70k+ psi and do not even know it.

i am going to try and work up a good load for the 180-200 AccuBond.

Hit up Woodycreek for a good 200gr AB load for the RUM. It is VERY accurate. I think he is also running around 95gr's of Retumbo, but I will let him jump in with his actual load data.

This is one of the targets shot with that load, and I would say this is probably the worst of the groups I have seen out of this rifle. Scotty

have not measured expansion but primer pockets are loose after first firing with nosler brass. so i know i am over pressure.

Yeah, I would check out Brian's load. I think he is getting good case life (using Nosler's brass) with his load and man, what a performer. It has made me rethink the RUM a little. Scotty

thanks, i am going to begin with 200's when they show up. i really like the 300rum and this krieger. this ruger's accuracy exceeds any bolt gun i have shot.

I have had great results with accuracy with 95-96 grains of Retumbo with 200gr ABs and Fed 215M primers. 96 grains grouped well but was hard on primer pockets. Recently switched to Nosler brass and the groups tightened up some more. The pic is 95 grains of Retumbo and Nosler brass with the 200gr AB going 3171fps.

"95-96 grains of Retumbo with 200gr ABs and Fed 215M primers"

That's become a well regarded combination for the .300 RUM. Hodgdon's max load of 95 gr Retumbo and the 200's was recommended to me when I was messing with the .300 RUM a few years ago. Really a nice-shooting load, with a lot of thump. The big 200's seem to make a lot of sense in that big cartridge case.

Regarding the OP's 165 gr load, Hodgon recommends a max of 103 grains of Retumbo with a 165 for 3414 fps. Of course that's with a Swift bullet, not a Nosler.

Guy

I tried some 180 combos but the 200 ABs made the most sense in the 300RUM. Hope to connect with an Elk next week with the 300RUM. I would also like to see Nosler make a high B.C. 220gr .30 Cal AB. HINT! HINT!
