Went to the range today and tried out some loads in my 300Win mag and my 357mag and when I finished I decided to sight in my 300 Win Mag for hunting season and here is my three shot group 165gr HPBT 3200fps average today, IMR4350, Win brass and 250 CCI primers. I think I am ready, in fact I know I am, can't wait.

How could you miss with that much paper? Mike, some fine shooting. Looks as if you have a great load going for you. Deer, black bear and hogs will be sweating now.

I had to make sure I could hit so I put of a 5 foot by 5 foot sheet of poster paper to make sure I could find each round. :) Yep, the deer, hogs and coyote had better watch out and the better not be with in range or it is lights out. :):):):)

Great shooting Mike. That 300WM is a SHOOTER! Man, you have done well with that one. That 165 is hammering out of it. Can't wait to hear how it does for you this year, but I suspect nothing is going to step to far away from the 300WM. Scotty

It is a shooter for sure, I do like this rifle indeed and love the 300Win Mag cartridge.

I have been goofing around a bit with my 300WM, but right now all my 300WM is still loaded up with the 200gr Sierra's GK's. I have the 200gr Nosler's so maybe this spring I will get to them again. Your right about the 300WM. It is a heckuva useful round. I kinda think of it as the modern day 30-06! Scotty

I like the notion or the idea that the 300Win Mag is the modern day 30-06. That is a good way to describe it's usefulness in this world of magnums. It hits hard, shoots flat, does not kick me like the 4 300Wby I owned did and it does not suffer from bolt trust like some short fat cartridge do and it only requires a standard length action and man is it accurate, shooting circles around two 300WSM's I owned and with my handloads my three 300Win mags out ran both of the 300WSM's. You ought to see how GB300win gets a 300Win mag to shoot. Yep, he has a surprise for us in the near future but I will let him unveil it. Please don't anyone take offense to my comments about my three 300Win mags our preforming my two 300WSM's in both velocity and Accuracy, it is what it is. You might have a different experience but this has been mine.

The 300WM is a very potent round in any aspect you look at it. 165's at nearly 3250 and 220's at over 2700. Either of those two would handle about anything. with a 220gr PT at 2700, I wouldn't be ashamed to hunt the really big bears with that set up! Scotty

That would work just fine with the great bears!

My old man used my 338 and 225gr Trophy Bonded Bear Claws for his bear. No issues with it. I couldn't imagine a 300 Win Mag at about the same speed, more SD doing any less than a great job. Granted, if I was spending the money to hunt the bears, I would want my 338 with 250's! Either way, a man would have to hunt some where else other than NA to want more than the 300WM I think. Wished I had some cases to use to load for my 300WM, all this talk makes me wanna get it out and shoot a little! Scotty

Scotty, Dr Mike said it very well when he said, "That would work just fine with the great bears!" I have not hunted the great bears just black bear, but I have been on the dark continent and the 300Win mag is impressive with the 200gr Partition and no doubt it would be with the 220gr moving at 2700fps. Get some brass and have fun with it again. It beats buying a come along lately new magnum rifle and cartridge, sure would be cheaper.

I took my first bull elk with my 300, a bunch of the Camp Pendleton, Ca Muleys I used to be able to hunt and some decent Idaho muleys. I like it alot. I also took a black bear with it in Idaho with the 200gr Sierra's. Overall, looking back, it is in the running for my most used caliber and I never realized it. My 7RM is number one with the 270WSM and 35 Whelen both on the 300's tail.

Plus, mine is a Ruger M77RBZ with a VXII 3x9. Just a reliable rifle that shoots well. The Limbsaver on it really helped out with recoil too. Scotty

Bullet!!! Great group I haven't had one that small in a couple of years.! Mine likes the 180's the best with the Sierra BT being the most accurate.

I had my 300 out of the stock over the weekend to fiddle with the basix trigger a little so I resighted yesterday. After a couple of shots to settle in I put a 3, 180 gr. Sierra BT's in at .622 then fired another shot which moved the group size out to an inch + a little . That shot was with a 180 Gr PT. with a different case brand, but same powder load. Didn't shoot any more but I always figured that the PT shot a little right of the Seirra's. Moved it 1 click to the left and will take it as is to Idaho next month.
