There is a new baby coming and I needed to get some loads ready for it's arrival. These are 150 grain seconds that will be used to break in the barrel.

Nice!

What are you getting and when is the delivery date?

It is a customized LSS with fluted barrel and bolt in a Bell&Carlson pillar bedded stock. Barreled action has been cryo'd, trigger tuned, bolt squared and lugs lapped. Saw a test target yesterday and the 3-shot group was .697 (outside edge to outside edge) with factory Remington load. Should be here next week. Putting a Swarovski AV 3-10 X42 on it. Might have to take it yote hunting this winter just to see how it shoots

I have certainly enjoyed the 300 WSM. In fact, I recently picked up a second iteration of the rifle. I have loaded for about 30 of them during the past several years, and find them quite easy to load for. I think you are going to love it.

Sounds like a nice rifle who's barrel did you use?

Sounds like a sweet heart for sure. Post a picture of the new arrival.

The barrel is the factory supplied barrel on the LSS. I think once it is broken in completely it will shoot if everything else is done right.

Dr. Mike -
You are a big part in my deciding to get back into the magnum game. Reading some of the posts you have had on loads made me take a second look at the cartridge. I hate belted cartridges, so this can be justified. The other reason for having this purchase was seeing some of the potential shots where we elk hunted this year. Most of my elk hunting has been in places where shots were not going to be over 300 yards, which is very doable with non-magnum cartridges. There were times where there could have been shots over 500 yards if the elk would have come out where they were supposed to. To me that would have been marginal for an ethical kill with what I was carrying.

257 Ackley,

Thank you for your kind words. I do appreciate the WSMs. I am blessed to be paid to shoot a number of magnum cartridges, as well as standard cartridges. However, I truly enjoy shooting the WSMs. They have proven to be a great deal of fun, and very effective for my hunting situations. If someone already has a 300 WM or a 300 Weatherby, there is no need to buy a WSM. However, one really doesn't need an excuse to buy a cartridge they don't have. I'll likely have a full stable of WSMs in my gun safe for many years to come, even though there will be other cartridges that do the same job very effectively.

It does sound nice. What "theme" is the stock?

.257,

Congrats on the new addition to the family  That should be just what the Doc ordered.
Certianly post some pics....

It is going to be an awesome rifle for sure. I can't wait to hear how it shoots. I am another fan of the WSM's. Even though I only have one WSM, it has been pretty easy to load for and has been a very accurate rifle with very little work. Someday I would like to get one of the 7WSM's or a 6.5WSM. I think one of those two would be another great combo. The 300WSM seems like it does just as well as the 300 Win Mag, and can be housed in a little smaller rifle. Ounces do count sometimes while humping through the mountains, so if you can save a few, why not. Plus, you aren't giving up anything for regular hunting situations. Scotty

beretzs, I can tell you from extensive loading for both the .300WM and WSM that it gives up nothing. Actually , in 24 inch barrels the WSM does better ballistically. The differences aren't such that the game will notice but with RL17 and RL22 and 180Grain partitions the WSM is slightly faster by about 50-60Ft per second. The bedst part is being able to carry it in a ligyhter rifle. As you get older the mountains get taller.

Yeah, I am still a youngin compared to some of you, and I am always looking for ways to get to the top of the mountains faster in the morning! If I didn't already have a 300 Win Mag I would have bought a Shortie. Scotty

Pics will be posted as soon as she/he arrives (do we name these things).

I had a 7mm-08 built for the high mountain type of hnting years ago that is 6.7 lbs with a Swarovski 3X9 scope. Always thought this would be the go-to rifle for any of that kind of hunting. This will be about 7.5 lbs with the scope and bases that are going on it. I had better still be able to carry that up a hill  . Nothing like the mind of an 18 year old and the body of a mid-50's guy to laugh at. :?
