Well my stock will be here tomorrow. Found some bottom metal that I slapped on it. I will post some pictures when it is in. I still need to find some mounts and need to get some glass thinking about getting another Minox and upgrading later. Anyone know what mounts are available? I want something fixed and stout. I was thinking Leupold dual dovetails but they are not made for a Pre-64. Thanks guys.

Jake, take a look at the Talleys, or if you want, a rail would fit the rifle, and allow you to use PRW's or QRW's, depending on what you like. Any of the Warnes should be GREAT as well. You have alot of choices for that rifle.

Can't wait to see what it does buddy. That should be a sexy round.

Looking forward to hearing more of it Jake! I have used a number of rings and bases over the years, and since switching Burris Signature Zee's,,,I haven't looked back. I still have a few that need the change over however.

Jake, I have also switched my .30-06 Model 70 to Talley Picatinny mounts they work great and are a stonger joint than the Leupold mounts.

The 338-06 is a great round; the AI is just a little more of a good thing. It should be fascinating watching your load development, Jake.

Should be a heck of a rifle!

I would like to build one. In fact, one of my .270s is destined to become a .338-06 AI. Oddly, if I were building on an M70, I would go with the standard .338-06, not an AI. I couldn't even tell you why the difference.

I would favor a .338-06, it has a strong reputation as a good medium game round. Its association with A-Square put the rifle out of the reach of most hunters which too bad as it is a fine cartridge and should be loaded by the ammo companies as commonly available factory ammo. Gives the Whelen a good run for the money powerwise.

Speaking of A-Square, when I have my .338-06 built, there's no way in heck I'm having that company's name marked on my barrel. I read somewhere that Art Alphin (sp?) did some stuff that really screwed up any possible way of other companies (other than Weatherby) adopting it.

I'll have to use the google-fu to see if I can find the article.

Yes the crew at Pac-Nor told me the same about the A-Square. If I remember right something about headspace and position of the shoulder. With mine being based on the 06 case if I ever got in a bind I could always feed it a diet of 30-06 ammo.

Talleys get my vote.

I too have a 338-06AI built with a new barrel (PacNor) placed on a Sako m75 greywolf...............LOVE IT !!!! LOves 225gr Accubonds and TTSX's.

The COAL of the Alpin design .338-06 is 0.40 inches longer than SAAMI for the .30-06. That could cause trouble if your gunsmith fdoes not give you .040 extra freebore and only as far as using factory ammo.

Jake,

Looking forward to seeing some pictures of the new rig. Congratulations buddy.

Here it is a granite 2-tone speckled McMilian Winchester Supergrade tan with black speckles mag fill with 2 pillars. I dropped it in and is fully free-floated. I still have to finish the barrel probably cerakote or duracote matte black. Gonna look at a picitinny rail for this and the Swede and swap the Minox for a bit until I get enough cash to scope it properly. It does look pretty slick and handles pretty well. Will try and get some better pictures tomorrow.

Sweet looking rifle, Jake. It will be a joy to handle and use in the field.

Well I fired it for the first time today. No sights just wanted to shoot it and boy what a joy. I was a little anxious to get a fireformed case so I can do some technical work on it. 50 gr of 4895 and booyah. I was surprised by the recoil, a lot less than expected. Maybe something to do with a good stock McMilian mag fill, and a light load around 50K psi.

Cartidges in the pictures left to right.
