Figure before I drop $30 on a new manual I would check here first:

looking to reload my 338-06AI with 200 grain hornady FTX's and 185 GMX's

I have a box of each so looking to use most of them up, then keep partial around for fireforming and use Noslers or ??? for hunting so hard to justify the manual when it's not going to be my main brand of bullet...

I know a long shot but any of you use these bullets and maybe have some starting points for me with loads?

currently have RL 19, IMR 4350 and H4831 to spread between the 338-06AI, 280AI, and 243

on the topic of 338-06:

what are some bullets/uses you guys prefer? I have seen a lot more mention of the 338-06 Here as compared to other places online.

same uses as the 280AI, deer/bear but this one will carry open sights so no need for pushing the distance limits

I use 210 gr Nosler Partitions for hunting with my .338 Federal and 4064 powder. For practice, I use the 200 gr Ballistic Silver Tip.

Tim, I think a 210 PT or even the 200 grain AB or BT would work well for your uses as a deer/bear rifle. Honestly, I would shoot whatever you can get your hands on, the cheapest at the Pro Shop. Stock up on them and hunt happily.

I agree with Jake, you'll need to get something faster, on the order of H414 or faster. RL15, 4320, 4895, etc would work much better in the 338-06.

will have to start looking around for something faster. I just lucked into finding those 3 powders and them all being listed for 243, 280ai and 338-06 but will keep my eyes open for some of the others too

I check the proshop almost daily now that i've figured out how fast some of that stuff can go... see the e-tips but hoping to see some AB's, BT's, or PT's come through.

just figuring i've got 200 rounds of hornady to use up too and I do have faith in their FTX's did a number on a deer out of my buddy's 45-70

G'Day Fella's,

Tim629, as mentioned above, the traditional best powder for the .338-06 has always been IMR 4320!
I use and equivalent ADI powder AR-2208, with both 200grn Hornady Spire Pt and Hornady 250grn RN bullets in my .338-06.

Hope that helps

Doh!
Homer

Yeah, those Hornadys will work great as well, but once you can lay into some 2nds they are money well spent.

Homer hit the nail on the head, 4320, 4064, RL15, Varget should all be really good in that rifle.

R15 is my go-to powder for the 338-06 with the 210 Partition. I have found H414 to be better with the 225 grain deep curls. Your AI should really be able to make those sing!

same question as always.... anyone know where RL-15 or IMR 4320 might be in stock

I went with the 3 powders I did since I happened upon them and 2 of them (IMR 4350 & RL 19) were listed as ones that could be used in the 338-06

but will keep my eyes open for the others since the 280 won't be done for this fall so it will be a 243 and 338-06 in my gun case going to PA

225gr Accubonds are my first pick and then the TTSX's. Both shoot great in my AI version. I prefer AB's from past experience in other calibers.

I might be grabbing some 4320 to try out in my Whelen if RL15 doesn't show up soon.
