338 225 gr loads

I have 2 questions for the Nosler experts (or any other "expert" out there ) :lol:

1. I am looking for a load for the 338 Win Mag, with 225 gr AB/NP with RL-22 powder. I found data for RL-19, but i don't have any on hand and have a hunch that RL-22 will work. Any data out there ???

2. I have tried both the 225 gr AccuBond and Partitions with the same load of IMR 4350, but noticed that the AB is a much longer bullet. I know that Nosler says that the AB's/PT/BT of the same weight will come out with about the same velocities, but with the longer bullet, doesn't the intrusion into the case slow things down a bit? Just curious! Does Nolser have any data on the 2 bullets/loads that they could show us?

I'm having great success with 180 gr BT's (0.5" or better) but am having a little difficulty with the 225 AB/PT, and bear season up here in AK is right around the corner!!!

Pressure is what sends the bullet down the barrel. The AB is longer than a PT and has more bearing surface but a PT has a solid ring in the middle of the bullet which creates a higher resistance. This is why you start low and work up while watching for pressure signs. Every gun/barrel is different.
You can use the load data in the Nosler book for either style of bullet so long as the bullet weight is the same or very close.

What kind of bear are you going to be hunting?

I'll be after interior AK grizzlies. I have also considered 250 gr pt, but am looking for an all around load for up here, that I can use on anything and occasionally at longer distances. Or even if i happen to take a trip to CO for elk and mulies.

Thanks for the info on bullet construction. That might answer my question.

I'd like to hear some more opinions though! :grin:

Dan, I shoot the 338 Win mag quite a bit and have had good luck with the 225 grain Partition bullets. I had absolutely no luck getting the 225 Accubonds to shoot in my rifle.

The loads that shot best with the 225 Partition were either 76 grains of RL 22 or 71 grains of H 4350. I settled on the H 4350 for the supposed insensitivity to temperature variation.

If I were hunting grizzly bear I would much rather have the long proven construction of the Partition over that of the AccuBond. The AccuBond might just work fine, but it is sort of a new idea that is still being proven in the field, in my opinion. I wanted to use them for an elk hunt due to that great Ballistic Coefficient a couple years back but just could not get them to shoot for beans. (The 225 Partition worked fine, both on paper and on the elk.)

yes, i'm having some trouble getting the AB's to group as well as the partitions. Funny cause it's the other way around for my 300 WSM. I gues that what makes this reloading stuff so interesting.!

Dan, I just had to give up on the 225 Accubonds in my own .338 Win Mag, I could seldom get three shots under 3 inches, let alone five shots. I have posted this on here before, but I tried the Accubonds in five different rifles of .338 caliber before I found one that would shoot them worth a darn. Finally when I put them in a new 338 RUM that I was testing they shot absolutely great! I mean, I shot two groups in the same afternoon that measured 0.35 inches!! But in the other rifles I tried I could not believe how poor they shot.

Like you, I get great groups with the Ballistic Tips in my .338 Win Mag. I have shot a mess of wild hogs with the 200 grain version and it puts them on the ground, right now.

I will go ahead and list some of my favorite loads below. These loads were tested in a Remington 700 Classic with a 24 inch barrel. Groups are for 3 shots at 100 yards.

R-P case/ Fed 215M primer/ 74 grains IMR 4831/ Nosler 200 BT/ velocity 2955 fps
most recent group fired with this load 0.44 inches

W-W case/ Fed 215M/ 71 grains H 4350/ Nosler 225 Partition/ 2899 fps/ 0.85 "

R-P case/ Fed 215M/ 76 grains RL 22/ Nosler 225 Partition/ 2856 fps/ 0.65"

The one load with the H4350 is very close to mine except i use IMR 4350 at 71.5. I tried 72.5 and i started seeing flattened primers and the little shiny spot ont he case head, so i backed down. I'm assuming my load is someplace around 2850-2900....Don't have a chrono, but my field test at different ranges seems to back that up as well. I'll do some more shooting tonight and report tomorrow. I use 75.5 gr of RL22 with my 225 gr accubonds. I get between 2800-2900fps out of my Winchester with a 26" barrel. Groups are under and inch. I used this load this past fall to bag a nice bull moose-the AccuBond worked great with not much meat loss due to bloodshot.
