Why is it that rainy days and downed hay always seem to cost me money in the gun department, not just the hay quality department. Those are some damn good numbers coming from a 225 AB!

Jake, by the time you are ready, we might have something figured out!

Update

1. Redding makes dies for the 338-375 Ruger! It's listed as the 338-375 R&D. 20 weeks to make them after they are ordered for $180 per set. 5% discount for three sets ordered.

2. Found a used Stainless M70 CRF 7mm Mag for $499. Think I can get it for $425-$450.

I'm in for one die set if you can find another victim (*ahem* Scotty)...

+1

brian you might want to look at the cz 550 action if your dead set on the control round feed also.

Or the pristine Interarms Mk X Mauser .300 Win mag I found for $349 - I'm apparently too silly to buy it.

That would be a sweet heart of a rifle as well for the project!

Update

Just called Bartlein and ordered the barrels. I have two stainless .338 cal #4 contour fluted with 5R rifling 1-10 twist on the way in 6 months.

Sweet!

I talked to my smith about it, and he is game. I thinnk I'm going a #4 non fluted though, or a #5 fluted. Hoping I can get mine ordered next week.

What are you going to finish your barrels at? 24"? 26"?

Sweet! Talk about getting the 1st step outta the way!

25" was the number I came up with as well. With the 375R case a guy is not going to need a super long barrel to get the speeds I'm looking for anyways.

I got to playing around with the barrel weight calculator on the Pac Nor site, a 26" #5 with 6 20" flutes weighs the same as a #3 with no flutes. And a #6 fluted is the same as a #4 not.

A Bartlein #4 contour is a good contour. It's .750" at the muzzle and about the same weight as a Sendero. Fluted that would put you about at a #5 from most everyone else.

I guess we shall find out in a few months!

Hopefully they surprise you and it's early or you'll be shooting it next year. I guess the Whelen or the .338WM will get to make the trip to Ideeho instead.

BTW Bugholes has a bunch of Brux #5 fluted and unfluted .338 barrels in stock as well as a Rock Creek #5 5R if you didn't want to wait. I've used Brux with good success and I have a Rock Creek in the safe that is a 6.5mm. You could have it up and running before elk season if the smith could work it in.
