Oh how I wish for +p 358win data.

I know its off topic, but I am jelous. Great cartridge the 338federal and maybe the single best ALL purpose big game cartridge for north america. And being a short action you an all purpose sized rifle. Not too small not to long, not the best at one thing but perfect for many hunting tasks.

Please do a water jug test with the 200gr AB and 180gr AB if you have them too.

I've got 200Gr. Accubonds. I'll try them. I didn't set out for this caliber but I had a 358 and It just seemed too big a caliber for the 308 and I thought the 338-08 would have been good. The rifle I saw was in that caliber and after exhaustive research I found it was as good as I hoped, on paper anyway. We'll see.

Has anyone tried the 200 gr. AccuBond in 338 Federal loads.

Greg, I have been shooting the 180 BT, 200 BT and 225 AB in the .338 Federal. All three shoot under an inch with the following loads in my Sako 85, the 210 PT shoots about 1.3 MOA with 3/4 bullets in MOA every group.
-180 BT, 45.0 grs IMR 3031, CCI BR2, Federal case, 2700 fps.
-200 CT, 47.5 grs IMR 4064, CCI BR2, Hornady .308 case, 2550 fps.
-210 PT, 47.0 grs IMR 4064, CCI BR2, Federal case, 2530 fps.
-225 PT, 45.5 grs IMR 4064, CCI BR2, Federal case, 2450 fps? (no chrono)

Note: Usually I can straight across sustitute AB's for BT's.

Thanks Oldtrader3
As soon as it shows up I'll try those loads. Which one do you hunt with?

Greg, for deer, the 200 BT (or Federal factory loads) and for elk the 210 Partition (my choice) or the 225 gr PT would work for Roosevelt's. The 210 Partition has been around ever since I have been hunting elk and has performed great on elk for me in a .338 WM as well.

TJen, check out QL, you can produce the data to 338F levels pretty easily.. I think my loads sit in the 62K realm, which is still not hot by any means, but it has some legs.. You have good loads already for yours though, not sure you would gain too much.. I think TAC is really the powder for the 358 though. I am using W748, which is also pretty good, but I think TAC might be a little better with less pressure.

Thanks
I have messed around with a few bullets but need to stick with the 225gr PT. I have some TAC I just need to try it with the PT and with 210M and 215M primers.

My old stand by is the 200gr Spire Point and H322 or H4895.

Greg

And I am eagerly awaiting your report on the Kimber, as I am considering one for a family member.

Jim

I'm putting one together for my bear/pig/elk rifle. How have the 200AB's worked out for you and what did you settle on?

I use 47 grains of IMR 4064 with the .338 Federal and the 200 grain AB. Velocity is almost 2600 fps.

Greg,

Congratulations on the new Kimber 338 Federal. Great round, a big stick in a small bundle.
Looking forward to your load development.

JD338

The rifle is light and has the power but because of the long free bore and short magazine I'm having to use the 200 gr Hot Core bullets (2600 fps) to get near the rifling . I can see where the Kimber gets a reputation for poor accuracy. I'd rather use Abs or Parts. I get better results with 185 Tsx (2800 fps) but the low BC drops the energy below the Hot Cores at about 120 yds. I even tried some 225 gr. Swift A-Frames because they are blunt but my velocity was way too low.
The accuracy is bout an inch and a half at 100 yds.
