I will be taking my 338 win mag Rem 700 BDL after elk for Colorados 1st rifle season this year. I am trying to decide on which partion to use, the 225 or the 250. What do you guys suggest. What powders have worked best for you with these respective weights?

I use a 225 Partition for everything, my gun has free boring and my load is 78.5gr H4831 for 2950fps. Hodgdon recomend a max load for factory guns of 74.5gr H4831.

I would go with the 225 gr, higher velocity and flatter trajectory. If you can't get decent accuracy, look at the 210 gr PT. This is more than enough bullet in youe 338 WM.

Either the 225 or 250 Partition will work well on elk.

I think I would go with the 225 grain, in fact that is what I shoot in my .338 Win Mag. However, your gun may well prefer one or the other when it comes to accuracy.

My Rem 700 Classic shoots either the 225 or 250 Partitions well. However, it shoots lousy groups with the 210 Partition and it shoots patterns, not groups with the 225 AccuBond.

My buddy has a Rem 700 BDL that shoots best with the 250 Partition, period. We have tried all the others mentioned above and the groups are pretty lousy. Go figure!

In my rifle I settled on a load using W-W cases, Fed215M primers, 71 grains of H 4350 and the 225 Partition. This load groups under an inch any time I do my part.

Good luck on your hunt.

I have used a 225 grain Partition since purchasing my .338 ultramag and i've pleased to say the least on performance.

Not sure what you are saying BRM. What have you used the 225 gr on and what kind of performance did you get. Did the bullets exit?
I also shoot a 338 RUM and plan on using the 225 gr PT for Elk and Moose.

I don't know what happened to my last post . Didn't get put in the way I typed it. I've used 225 grain partitions with my .338 Ultramag from day 1 and love them. They definitely anchor Elk quickly.

I am a big 210 Partition fan personally, but I know that each rifle is different from the next. Any Partition in .338 caliber is a great choice for elk in my opinion. However the only way to know what the accuracy will be is to shoot them. (My favorite part of reloading.)

I agree on the 210 Partition. I've taken several elk with it when I hunted with the 338 WM. This one was taken in 2000:

That is a beauty of a bull! I sure would love to run imto one like that

I will be picking up some 225s & 250s today. Then see which shoot better for my rifle.

I am sure the 210s work, but they just seem a bit light to me for the 338. Althought I will most likely try some just to see how the shoot.

Aside from running to get into shape for the Rockies.......reloading will help pass the time while preparing for the trip. This will be fun!

Iron Buck, best wishes on your trip. The 225's are "just right" in the 338 WM IMO. However, if they won't group in your 338, I'd never worry about the 210 Partition on any elk. The bull in the pic above took one right in the kiester, no prolemo.

PS, that bull was shot at one in the afternoon, second Satruday of November, high for the day was five degrees. When I left the truck in the morning it was minus twelve. On the other hand I remember shooting a bull on the first weekend of Novemeber one year when the high's were in the low sixties... be prepared for anything!
