My Ruger 77 in .338 WM loves the 225 grain bullets and my two favorites are the Hornady Inerlocks and Nosler Partitions. I may have a chance to hunt Brownies in Alaska next year and I really don't want to start messing with new loads for a 250 grain bullet. I'm hopeing that the 225 Partitions at 2800 fps will be ok. Anyone had any personal experiance with them for the bigger/dangerous North American game?

ducksoup,

The 225 gr PT is more than up to the task of big bears from your 338 WM.
I have done quite a bit of testing with this bullet and the accuracy, expansion and penetration from my 338 RUM is very impressive!

That is good to know about the 225 grain Partition, as my 340"bee" and my ruger 338 win both really like that bullet! I dont know if my 338rum will shoot it or not, it does well with 250 grain pills. You cant tell I like .338 's can you?

340boy,

I too am a 338 fan. With the bigger cases, you have flat trajectory with a lot of on target energy. Every animal I have taken with the 338 RUM has dropped in its tracks, including a bull elk at 350 yds.
The 225 gr PT with 90.0 grs RL22 from my 700 LSS 338 RUM shoots under .5" at 100 yds.

JD338,

Yes, there is something about the 338's...
I bought my 338RUM after a bad experience with a 338-378, just could not get it to shoot. The only Weatherby that I have owned that was so fickle.
I have loaded up some 250 grain partitions with RL25 for the Big RUM, I probably will not get out to try them out until after fall hunting season. However, next year I am hoping to do a guided elk hunt, and I may just take that RUM with 250 grain partitions. Could be awesome!!

340boy,

Try this load for the 250 gr PT in the 338 RUM.

No Hornady Interlocks for Alaska Brown Bear........the best bullet is the 225 Barnes TSX and Nosler 250 Part in the 338 Win.

Swift A Frame in 225 and 250gr deserve mention also!

My choice 225 TSX and Reloader 19

I wouldn't worry about it.A 225gr. doing 2800 will do the job.And if thats what you're comfortable with,& your rifle shoots it well.I wouldn't change.I use the 225gr.AccuBond 'till they come out with a 250gr.(I HOPE)These made clean pass through on a bull elk last year @over 500 yds.& That was through the shoulders.

Thanks for all your input guys. I was certain there wouldn't be a problem, but it's nice to hear other opinions.

Alaska, I didn't intend on using the .225 Hornady Interlocks for bear hunting, although a buddy of mine and I have used them a lot on big game up to elk without any problems. I like the Interlocks in my .338, the're accurate and they've never let me down. But when your prey has the ability to eat you, I want all the confidence I can get and I'll choose a premium bullet. Sometimes we forget that premium bullets are relatively new and a lot of big game, including the big bears, has been taken with "standard" bullets. While 2800 fps works just fine, it doesn't put a lot of undo stress on most bullets, at least not like some of the super mega case .338's. I'm lucky, my Ruger shoots both the Hornady IL and the Nosler Partition to the same point of impact with the same load, 75.0 grains of H4831, so I can pick the bullet I want to use for any given situation.

For moose I use the 225 AB but for big bear the 225 TSX........super good bullet.

H4831 is a excellent powder for the 338 Win. For the 225 gr I have had good luck with Reloader 19 over the years. Reloader 22 with 250 grain bullets is also performer which is very close too Norma MRP.

I have not hunted the Alaska brown bears with my 338 Win Mag, but I have used it on bison. I used a 225 Hornady Interlock and the bullet completely fragmented. The bison did go down, but it did take a second Hornady. I have used Nosler 210 and 250 PT on elk, and they came down immegately, no questions asked. I would stick with the Nosler for BIG stuff.

Well Hal...
That is non premium bullet performance for you, especially on a huge animal like Bison.

BTW Welcome to the forum.

I have taken my share of animals over the years mostly with Sierra Gamekings......I only started using Prem bullets here in Alaska.

For Black bear, interior grizz, caribou, sheep and goat......I still use the Gamekings......only for moose I use the AB.

I have noticed at 200 + yards the Gamekings r excellent with good weight retention. Closer, then make sure u shoot for the lungs. 99% of all my shots are here anyway.

For the big Brownies on the coast I would suggest the Barnes TSX 225 gr in the 338 Win.
