I got this, my final and largest CA blacktail Friday night. He was about 100yds downhill from me when I let him have a 200ET injection. He weighed in at a whopping 88lbs. This is the reason I take so much gun out.

Here's the exit.

Rich,

Congratulations on your nice buck. Good job with the 338 RUM and the 200 gr E-Tip. Looks effective for sure.

How much meat loss? That exit doesn't look that bad for a cannon shot. The last deer I hit with a 225 AB about 75yds was about the same size deer, but I could put my hand in the exit wound. Needless to say I had a LOT of meat loss from the off shoulder.

The damage doesn't appear to be that bad, as the shot was behind the shoulders. Anyway, I grind most of meat on these little deer for jerky and burger patties.

Just for a comparison, here is an exit on a spike WT deer I shot last year with the 250 gr AB from mu 338 RUM. MV is 2950 fps and the buck was 40 yds away.

Rich, congrats on the great little buck. Seems like a great exit and really good meat buck. Next year you will be chasing real Muleys and getting a chance to stretch that big 338 out. I am hoping to get a few deer with the AccuBond load I have for my 338. Everytime I see JD's picture I feel a little jealous he is having all that fun with his. Seems like that 200gr ET is making a really good track record. Scotty

Thanks Scotty,
The 338RUM's work in CA is complete, it's taken a hog and a BT . I'm going to chrono my 250AB loads to figure out what to sight them in at and hopefully shoot something much larger with it next year in Idaho.

Those 250gr Accubonds are sure going to be deadly in Idaho. I know I am pretty fond of the 225's in my 338 right now, and they aren't near the bullet the 250's are, ballistically that is. I would think you would have a solid rifle to shoot from stem to stern on a big bull with that. Glad your having good luck out West. I am still culling as many does as I can here in Va. Meat is good and I can shoot a gangload of them with a bow! Scotty

Right now I'm guessing over 3000, maybe even 3100 for my 338RUM and the 250AB. JD338 is getting 2950 with 98.6gn of Retumbo, I'm using 101gn of Retumbo. I'll find out soon enough.

Wow, that load is smoking! That is going to be a monster. Can't beat having that kind of power when you need to reach out and touch one of those big ID bulls. Scotty

The reason I am using 98.6 grs with the 250 gr AB is the first shooting session with it went under .5". The same charge weight pushed the 250 gr PT at 3024.

Rich, you got my curiosity. I an going to have to clock the 250 gr AB with 101.0 grs of Retumbo. I'll let you know what I get.

JD338

That is a lot of horsepower. Man, you guys and your Ultra Mags, making us plain old Win Mag guys jealous. Ha. Awesome shooting. Scotty

Congrats!

What does your gun shoots the e-tips like?

Heck, if I'd got .5" at 98.5gn I would have stopped as well regardless of the velocity.

Rich,

Exactly why I didn't do any load development!

This target was shot at 200 yds. I snugged down the rings and mounts and wanted to check my zero. Shot the sighter made adjustment and then brought down the last shot to the x. I wish I would have shot a group and then made my adjustment!
