For me, the .340 Weatherby with 225 gr and the Number One 9.3x74R with 276 gr Nosler Partitions are pretty close in recoil ft/lbs because of the weight difference of the Mark V being a couple pounds heavier than the Ruger. Anyhow, I put a Limbsaver on the 9.3x74R and it is bearable now.

When I did some elk huntin' years back, I found the 210 PT over a compresed charge of 7828 was the cat's meow in the .340WBY. Never had to track a single bull !!!!!!!!!!!!!

The 225 Partition was my favorite in the .340 Weatherby. IMR 7828 SSC, 88.0 grains would get you about 3080 fps with that bullet and DRT elk!

This, right here, is a concern I have if/when I buy an M70 .338... I fear the urge to rechamber or rebarrel to .340 will be too much for me.

I wouldn't sweat it too much Kurt. The 338 will put them out around 2850-2875 without drama. More would be okay but unless your hunting with a heavy rifle or braked, the 340 would be more than I'd like to shoot in the off season too much. Plus, I'm not sure the elk would like either.

Problem is, I read an article by Ross Seyfried in about 1990 about the .340, and I've been smitten ever since!

That was my issue too. I had owned several .338 WM's, both Browning and Winchester. I started wanting a .340 Weatherby in the late 1970's when they became popular as a long range elk rifle in the late 1970's.

I probably read the same one Kurt. The 340 is a hammer, for sure.

I couldn't imagine a 210PT out of a 340 that wouldn't just be about the top of the heap in the elk mtns.

I was thinking 225, but yeah.

Yeah, you really can't pick a bad one in this department. With the 340 I am thinking you could nudge a 250 along at 2900 pretty easily. That would have everything. Close range penetration and great ballistics out far. I just shoot whatever sells at the time.. I figure I get them reasonably enough it doesn't hurt too much to switch up from year to year!
