Well after a heads up from dubyam, I should have a .340 Weatherby Mark V Alaskan on the way. I say should as I dont ever count my chickens before they hatch LOL. The gun has a 26" barrel + muzzle brake.

So now I gotta start thinking on loads. I am thinking about trying the 180gr. or 200gr. GS Custom bullets, 225gr. TSX, and pretty much same weights in the accubonds. I like em moving fast!!

I'm assuming the nice folks down at Mark's took good care of you? Glad to hear it worked out to your satisfaction. Enjoy the new Alaskan!

They did! I called them and talked to them about a few different rifles they had. Out of all I was interested in, they threw me the best deal on that Alaskan you showed me. So good, i don't want to say how much but lets just say it was significant! I had them bore scope it and they said it was clean clean clean, so I hope they are honest about it. I kicked it around for a while as I have never bought a used rifle sight unseen . I decided it was a good enough deal that even if it isn't to my standards, I could resale it here where that size of rifle is far more popular and probably make money on it. I am waiting on a bonus check to come in but I finally decided I needed to jump on this before someone got it. So I took advantage of their charge card deal. All I am waiting on now is approval but I am not worried about that.

IMR 7828 aith 210 PTs at 3200 fps

The 210 gr PT at 3200 fps is a flat shooting hammer.

So 7828 seams to be the powder of choice. I was really expecting to see RL22,25,33 and Retumbo come up as well. So would 7828 still be a good choice for the lighter weights like the 180's (or the GSC 180 which acts more like a 165) or would I want to go to something faster?

I thought I knew powders till that 25-06 thread that still has me so messed up I cant get my head around it.

I would think 7828 would be excellent for the big 340. It is impressive across the board. RL22 would be my choice, only because I use alot of it, but 7828 should be awesome.

Looks pretty good with the 180 GSC..

G'Day Fella's,

Sako7STW, the only load I have worked up in my .340 Wthby, is as follow;
200grn Hornady Spire Pt, 94grns of Reloader 22, Weatherby cases, CCI 250Mag primers,
5 shots chronographed (Oehler 35 P) as follows
Max Vel = 3218 fps
Min Vel = 3184 fps
ES = 34 fps
Std Dev = 14 fps
Average = 3204 fps

Hope that helps

Doh!
Homer

I always figured that if you are going to shoot 180-200 grain loads in a a .340, get a .300 Weatherby instead. The loads that I used in my .340 were listed as factory loads by Weatherby at one time. I mostly used the 210 and 225 grain and both will just at 3100 with the 225 gr Partition and over 3100 (slightly) with the 210 Partition. I used the 225 grain Partition because they were the most accurate in my 26 inch, Accubraked Alaskan and the outran the 210's at 500 yards.

Mine liked IMR 7828 and 250 grain. It would shoot the 200's extremely well too, but its sweet spot was the 250 grain.

Reloader 25 @ 90.0 or 87.0 of IMR 7828
250gr Nosler Part or AccuBond
WBY Cases
Fed 215M primer

IMR 4350 @ 84.0
with 210 Nosler Part
same primer and brass
Dupicates Factory load
Excellent load for lower 48

Trim all brass to 2.815"

My .340 Weatherby, 225 Partition loads with 88.0 grains of IMR 7828 SSC powder and a FED 215 MM primer clocked at 3080 fps. My 250 Partition loads with 87.0 grains of 7828 clocked at 2890 fps but were starting to have bolt lift issues and ejector marks on the case head.

Got ya, thank you for the heads up Charlie. Both numbers look very good, that is for sure.

The old Weatherby sheet listing IMR 7828 loads for the Weatherby cartridges are supposed to be old factory loads. Maybe something has changed in the meantime but these loads should be approached very carefully!

Wow, thanks for the great info guys. I hope the rifle will be here this week. It got delayed on shipping a few days because I was stuck at work and missed giving them the final go ahead. I cant wait for it to get here!! I really want to get after some of those GSC bullets and some of the NABLR's if they have them for .338's .

When I had mine I used 8mm Mag brass that you can just run it thru the sizer and comes out with the Wby shoulder. Trim the length and load. Start lower and work up; 88 gr 7828ssc 225 grain Hornady @ 3120. Kicked like a mule but shot under an inch. My other load was 200 BT's with imr4350, they shot real well also!
