Someone asked the other day how I was able to get 61gr's of RL15 into RP cases. Well, I tried to take a picture of it. It is slightly higher than the shoulder/neck junction with 61 grains dumped into the case. If I pour slower, through the drop tube, it sits down in the shoulder area. Sorry for the crappy pictures, but I wanted to post this up.

My COAL is 3.467" with the 225 AB. I am "just" barely touching powder when this bullet it seated. Luckily for me, the Remington has a LONG mag and throat. It shoots though.. Can't complain

Loaded 225's

Scotty, my 225 gr AB load is at 3.430" with 60 gr of Varget it is slightly compressed, have loaded the bullet out further but got better accuracy where it is now. Like how the 225 gr AB looks loaded all up.

Me too! The AB's are pretty sleek bullets. Can't wait to put a few of the 225 AB's into water jugs. Rather have a moose or elk to shoot into, but its a little early in the year!

Scotty,
Good post buddy and by the way real good looking Whelen Loads. The 225's look ready to go.

Good show Scotty.
The '06 case holds a fair amount of powder.

Great photos to demonstrate what is going on. Thanks for posting, Scotty.

That was probably me, Scotty. Thanks for the effort, my friend!

I've never resorted to using a drop tube, so I guess I have no idea just how effective it can be in compacting a charge. Maybe I should play with one just so I'll know. Who knows, maybe I'll be able to do some stuff I thought not possible...

I'm loading 225-grain Accubonds also, over 59.5 grains of Re15. The charge comes up to about halfway up the neck and I'm seating the bullet to an OAL of about 3.310 inch to fit the finished ammo in the magazine of my econo-custom 98, so I am compressing the charge somewhat. The load shoots MOA so I am happy with the accuracy. When I worked up the load a couple of years back, I noticed that half-grain increments in charge weight gave minimal gains in velocity so I don't feel like I've a lot to gain with an increased charge. If a 225 at 2675 fps can't kill what I'm shooting at, then I probably have no business shooting at it!

I've really taken a shine to my Whelen. It and my other econo-custom 98 (in .280) are turning out to be a great pair of rifles!

I used a drop tube when I was loading the 185 XLC in my 338 WM, made a huge difference!

Those are some sharp looking rounds you got there Scotty! No elk will stand a chance!

At least this thread started as a 35 Whelen thread and not a .257 Roberts thread.

It's only a matter of time till the topic is turned towards something else though Bruce

I kinda like the drifting.. Keeps it more active for me.

Interesting conversation always drifts to some extent! But because every comment is still visible in a thread, it's not difficult to revisit a particular point when desired. Doesn't bother me in the least!

Just a jab, I too tend to wander a bit and I'll have to admit I've been soaking up every bit of conversatoin on the Whelen.

Bruce, it really is a fun cartridge. Not a barn burner, but it seems to be pretty accurate with most bullet weights and it is a fairly efficient use of the 30-06 case. Shooting the 338WM side by side with the Whelen makes me wonder why I keep the 338 sometimes. It does the same with work with similar bullets and less powder.

Hey Scotty you mentioned yesterday that it is a little early for hunting. I have to agree but if you are early there is a lot less pressure on the animals  You know I am kidding
Someday I might get to load for a 35 Whelen :!: it has been so long I think someone is getting back at me for selling the first one I had. Never sell a 35

Blessings,
Dan

If your Whelen is anything like mine, it'll be quick load work Dan. Mine seems to shoot everything pretty well, with good speeds to boot. Truly a good cartridge. Can't wait to hunt.. Feels like it is going to be forever!

Scotty,
The off season gives us time to tweak loads, test loads, shoot long range, buy more reloading components, buy more guns and tree stands. Keep repeating the sequence over and over again.

Exactly, you have seen the light!! The 338-06AI 35 Whelen are as close to equals as possible and they are dang near a match to the 338WM but the 280 or AI is darn near a match to a 7RM too but the 06 case uses less powder in each account. Plus they are a lot more fun to shoot! And you don't have to use a brake on them.
