I got my elk this year year, only took one shot on the last day of the season. after the shot it went about 20 feet. What will make this hunt memorable is the 2nd to last day it started out with snow on the ground and in the trees then by 8am it started raining so I got really wet from melting snow and rain. I got home that night and cleaned my rem 760 in whelen. I discovered the transfer bar that holds the pump closed and ingages the trigger mechnism was not engaging all the way and had to be pushed up by hand. This meant using the rifle as a single shot.
So on the last day when I kicked out the 1st elk I saw in the 4 day season and saw horn I took a running shot as I was in brush and timber. I was excited to getr the elk a fork that is about 3 feet tall. None the less I took the rifle to the gun smith the very next day. It was a perfect shot hit the very top of the heart qand the lower section of the lungs and exited the rear part of the shoulder on the other side. what ever I am the whelen at and pull the trigger it always dies really quick.
