35 Whelen loads?

Yup. For sure Tom, and just about any powder will get 2500 out of a 250 PT without making anything sweat. It is a tank of a round and really about all you would ever want for hunting animals bigger than deer.

Curiosity got the better of me so I ran QuickLOAD on IMR4320 with the 225-grain AccuBond for the .35 Whelen, and it looks to me like it should be a contender.

Funny thing about 4320...I had a small amount on the shelf for a while some years back and never chose it since it was not really a good match for anything I was loading at the time. I would just use it for fouling rounds when testing loads in a newly cleaned bore. It would really bug me when I'd fire three fouling shots out of one of several .280s I've owned, and all three would cluster into about a half-inch! Velocity was around 2500 fps, IIRC and I just couldn't see hamstringing a .280 that way but I always think about that when I see 4320 mentioned.

I know if I can't find some RL15 soon, 4320 is going to get a workout on my Whelen.

I bought a bunch of IMR 4320 years ago but never found a use for it until now in a 223. But my 35 Whelen load consists of H4895 behind a 225 Barnes TSX. Seemed too fast for the case, but it worked very well in the end in my gun.

Yeah, I plan on grabbing some 4320 the next time I see a lb, just to give it a whirl in my Whelen. If I could grab some danged RL15 from somewhere, I would be much happier, but alternatives are surely good to have in todays world too..

Scotty if you were north of the 49th I could spare a lb or 2 of RL-15.
That line on the map is such a pain.

Blessings,
Dan

ETA on return of my rifle is Monday Aug 5. Till I get the stock fully fitted (some minor sanding out of prior bedding still needed) and then skim bedded, it'll be about this time next week till I get to shoot it. Hopefully I'll have some good targets to post.

That sounds great, Tom. I'm certain there will be quite a few people anxious to see what you have. It assuredly sounds like a quality project.

I'm anxious to see what I have, too! The waiting is tough, and JES doesn't take long for them to be done and turned around. It's like being a kid on Christmas Eve, and Christmas Eve takes two weeks to pass, lol.

I'm very much looking forward to your targets. What's your first load going to be?

I figured I'd start with the HotCor and I have 4320 and 4064 on hand. I'm going to start at 4320. Somewhere in my email/PM's, I have min/max data that Jim B ran on QL for me.

Those should be good. I'm actually looking forward to your results. I'm needing some RL15, but I would rework if 4320 works well and I can lay into 8lbs of it.

I got two pounds of it at Cabelas, since they have it readily now.

Scotty, can you run me some QL data? Jim sent me "min/max"....I didn't get to see the whole run of charges/pressures/velocities.
