Does a whelen need a 24" barrel or will a 22" work well? What kind of velocity difference?

Thanks

Scott

Scott,

I have a M700 Classic 35 Whelen with a 22" barrel. My pet load for the 250 gr PT is 59.5 grs RL 15 and I am getting 2584 fps.
Scotty has the CDL with a 24" barrel and he is loading 60.0 grs RL 15 for 2600+ fps. Not much difference.

The 22" barrel is quite handy in the woods.

I'm with JD on this one too there won't be much difference between 22 and 24". My old Whelen got good speed and accuracy with a 22" the new one I have will have 24 just because. I have been able to get 2750 fps easily with 225`s in my present Whelen.

A 22 inch barrel will serve you well, Scott. You won't gain more than 50 fps with the extra two inches, which may be somewhat more bulky for carrying.

Thanks Jim!
Just thinking about scratching an itch.

Scott,

With the right load and scope, the 35 Whelen is a 400 yd rifle.
You will not be disappointed with a 35 Whelen, it is a hammer on game.

Other than giving up a little B.C.(trading it for frontal mass) it looks to about duplicate a 325WSM but with a whole lot more cool factor. 8) Or should I say the 325 duplicates the 35 Whelen. I missed out on a NIB Ruger 77 in 35Whelen for less than $500. :(

Thats exactly why the the 325 I had went down the road, it's a great round but it more of less duplicated the Whelen I all ready had.

22-24" wont make enough difference to matter. Mine does have a 24" tube on it, but I don't really gain much over anything Jim or the others get with their 22's.. I am running the 250's at 2630 and the 225's at 2740. I kinda like the balance of the my CDL, but I doubt I would be able to tell much difference with a 22. Like Mike said, probably 50FPS at worst..

That Ruger sounds like a sweet one Scott. That would have been a great buy I think!

My Whelen started life as one of those Rugers. It was a decent rifle--not spectacular, but decent.

I had an 18" barreled whelen and didn't miss the extra 6" of barrel. I was able to get 2400fps with 250gr speeds and didn't even start to push the pressures. It was a remington 750 auto loader so hot loading wasn't an option. Thats about perfect velocity window for those 250gr speer and hornady bullets too.

Scotty, that 700 looks to be in nice looking piece of wood :) it is just do bad that it is hit or miss if it will be a out of the box shooter or is it going to have to be tricked up a bit

Blessings,
Dan

I would be being made in the 80's it is a good one. I would almost bet a paycheck on that rifle. Those Classics are some nice rifles.

That Classic 35 Whelen is of 1988 vintage. Very nice looking, well made and accurate!
Ah, the good old days of Big Green....

I have the same rifle and she is a shooter. The action is smooth as silk too.

Yes, the older ones were definitely shooters. I have 2 BDLs from the early 80 a lefty & one from the wrong side that my son shoots.
They are great :!: now my CDL is also a great shooter but I did have to get the trigger done.

Blessings,
Dan

I picked a Rem 700 BDL in 35 Whelen here on this forum. It was a local deal. Nice rifle. I have added a B&C medalist stock and will coat the rifle this summer. Adding a Leupy 2.5-8x36 scope and I will have a great PNW rifle. Elk, bear & the opossum watch out.

With this, a Rem 673 in 350 RM, a 300 WSM...I just wonder why I have a 338 WM sitting in the safe. The 338 just never gets shot. Someday soon, I think it will be headed down the highway.

Why are the 35 cal. 225 Accubonds somewhat hard to find?
