35 whelen

JD338,
I'm working on the same load you use for your 35 Whelen with 225 AB and RL15 Powder. What primers are you using and are you using new brass or resized fired brass?

Thanks,
Don

Don,

I use R-P 35 Whelen brass, fire formed to my chamber. Primers are Federal GM210M.

Also my favorite caliber- I have always used BLC2 for my whelen, I don't think I got listed velocities with it but it shot good. I got some Rel15 and it shots just as good. I use 250 Part. for elk and black bear. I use 200 grn rem rn cl bulk bullets for deer. I did pick up some 225 part. 2nds I will have to give them a try.

RL15 is the king in the Whelen for me. It makes excellent accuracy and awesome speed. Really allows you to sneak up on the 338 Win Mag with the 225-250gr bullets. I have grabbed some 225's NPT's for the 358 Win. I am sticking with the 250's in the Whelen. It just seems to suit that case. I wouldn't be afraid to hunt anything with a 250gr bullet and the Whelen. Still waiting on Nosler to put some 2nds of the 250 up. When they do, I will grab a few hundred of em. Scotty

Acouple weeks ago was at local gunshow found an unfired Rem Classic 35 Whelen that followed me home. I got afew rds fired in it last week and I might chrono it this week kind of a nice rifle not sure about the 22" barrel.

I got 5 firings on one case so got a good chamber and it takes the same size neck bushing as the 35 Whelen AI. I broke the barrel in with IMR-4064 I'll try that and R-15 and I have some Scot 3032/surplus IMR-8208 that I want to shoot in that rifle.

Man, that was a good grab. It almost seems proper to have the M700 and 35 Whelen, since it was Remington that made it a legitimate round. I wouldn't sweat your 22" barrel at all. I don't think the Whelen is a fussy about barrel lengths. I have a 24" tube on my CDL, but if it was a 22" I don't really think I would too awfully much. Hope it shoots well for you. I would like to pick your brain about the AI version. That seems to be nearly what the 338WM will do. Scotty

My Whelen has a 22", barrel makes it easier to club the brush out of the way. I am using 4064 with 250 gr bullets. I mostly use the 250 because I had several hundred of them left over from another project. I would start at about 50 grains and ease up a little at a time and see how it does. I have not spent much time with load development but its easy to load for and mine does shoot around an honest inch with little fuss. I have Remington factory cases but have used 06 cases opened up with no problem, I did aneal them before sizing.

What a great find! I regret letting my Classic slip away. It shot better than it should have. It is among the rifles that should never have left.

I have a M700 Classic 35 Whelen with a 22" barrel and she is a shooter.
