what do you guys think of the 357 mag and deer (85-100lbs) at short ranges (20-50yds) ???

brianm,

I am of the opinion that the 357 Mag is on the lightt side as a big game cartridge. Myself, I deer hunt with a S&W 629 44 Mag w/ 250 gr PT's.

If all you have is a 357 Mag, use a max load with the 180 gr PT.

I am not a fan of the .357mag for deer, but if that's all you have, keep shots under 50uds & use at least a 140gr bullet. Try for a full broadside, double lung shot.

I concur. There are better tools for the aforementioned task.

just wondering I hunt with a ruger bisley in 45 colt but I got a sw 586 357 mag and it is such a good shooter that I thought it might be good for deer

I took a mid sized doe using 357 Mag 180 Grain Partition Gold (2003). It was a quartering shoot, the bullet entered on the right front chest, broke a rib, passed through the lungs and stopped in the left rear leg. It performed perfectly. If you want to see the recovered bullet go to the following link: http://www.noslerreloading.com/phpbb2/v ... .php?t=715

I do not see a problem using a 357 at all!
