So I got my savage 16 in now just gotta wait on the shaw 358win barrel I ordered with barrel wrench. my question is.... Looking @ my new savage I noticed the barrel nut is smooth, no grooves. So how do I go about removing it. I work at a waste water plant so my pea brain says first try a strap wrnech then go for the big pipe wrench, but I'm sure this is not the way

Put some rosen and a piece of leather wrapped around the nut before you grab it to put any torque on it. I would buy one of the older nuts with the spanner wrench grooves and use a spanner wrench myself. You might consider doing that?

I will definetely will be putting one of the older nuts on. I bought a gun/barrel vise and the savage nut wrench, what are you advising I torque the leather wrapped nut with.
