I took this Bear a few weeks ago in Saskatchewan at 454 lbs. he's my best to date. Shot was 35 yards, he was walking toward me when he turned and looked hard to his right . Bullet hit right where the neck and shoulder come together. he dropped and never twitched after about 20 seconds I saw his chest heave so I gave him another. Not sure which shot the bullet is from the hits were very close together. I only found 1 bullet it was laying in the bottom of the chest cavity the Bullet weighs 379 grs. The load is a really stout charge of H335 , a load I got from a Brian Pearce article , said to push that bullet at 1900 fps. though I have never chronoraphed it. The rifle is a Marlin 1895 Guide gun with XS ghost ring sights and is one of the funest guns I own to shoot and hunt with.

That thing is a beast, congrats on a dandy bear. What did the hide square out?

I never Measured it , but it was 74" from the tip of his nose to the base of his tail and if I remember right 54" around his chest behind the front legs. He's everything you want in a bear Long , tall , thick with a really big head.

That is an absolute beauty he does have it all. Looks like the 45-70 was up to the task..........

A really great bear. You did well. The 45-70 is definitely up to the task.

That is a beast of a bear, congratulations!

Wow! Awesome bear! What a HORSE! Congrats on that monster.

Awesome bullet recovery as well. The big 45 does open a fair swath.. Great stuff.

Congrats on a great bear. A 45-70 is near the top of my bucket list of future cartridges.

Those rem 405 sure do kill well as long as they get into the vitals. Running that fast they open up quick and wide and really do some damage. Great deer/black bear bullets.

Congratulations! What a great bear!!!

I liked the 405 Remington bullet when I was hunting with a .45/70, put one right through the shoulders of a mulie doe at about 70 yards. She went down hard. Bullet went right on through. I was pleased.

At that point those bullets were readily available in bulk, at good prices. They were accurate too. I'm not sure how widely available they are anymore.
