Made a HOT trip to the range to wring out some loads in the re-barreled 416 Rem. and the 280 rem WBY UL/LT.
The 416 went from 2640 fps with the 300gr TSX to 2840 fps. The barrel is 6 inches longer and weighs 3 pounds less. Thank heavens for the muzzle break. I'll load it up and do an accuracy check next visit. It looked promising at 50 yards.
The 280 drove 150 Scirrocos and 160 Accubonds at 2885 and 2790 respectivly. It kept missing the paper with the accubonds after the first 3 shots at 50 yards. It's one accurate rifle. I've loaded up and next trip will include pictures.

That sounds great, Greg. Beginning to approximate the Yin and the Yang of the cartridge world.

Man, that must have been a brutal trip! I woke up early, and it was probably in the upper 70s at 4:15 this morning in the 'Diego, worse inland. Saw 120 on my truck thermometer yesterday in Campo!

Those S II bullets interest me... I bought a couple of boxes to try in my .25-06 and .257 Weatherby.

Greg,

Sounds like you are off to a good start.
Hope it starts to cool off soon so you can do your load development. A wet rag with cold water will help keep your barrel cool. Wrap the barrel between shots.

The Shaw barrel did ok. I shot about 8 rounds of various types and preliminary sight in. It did put the three 300gr TS touching at 50 yards. I'm loaded up now so next trip will be for accuracy and long range. As a side note I just weighed the 26" braked barrel 416 Rem model 700 With 4-12x40 scope mounted it weighs 8 lbs 2 oz. With the 300 gr. TSXs it's not bad. With the 350 gr. Hot core bullets it tends to spring open the magazine cover, and the shooter.

What powder are you using in the .416? I get about 2960fps out of my 26" .416 with the 300gr Barnes bullets using a grain below max of H4895. Mine will shoot sub 1/2" 3 shot groups with that load but it weighs about 2-2 1/2 lbs more then yours. It has a Lilja #7 barrel.

I'm using RL 15 at 90grs. I havn't experimented much yet I just shot up what I had worked up in the 19" barrel (22" minus porting). I'll give your load a try. I'm also using CCI250 primers and loading to and OAL of 3.6" I'm thinking a slower powder will take better advantage of the long barrel. I'll try your load.
Thank You
Greg
