The same powder charge with a 350 gr Swift (awesome bullet) resulted in 2040 fps.

I agree with Guy, this is an awesome bullet

Fotis,

Do you use Northfork and/or Swift ? they are very good bullets. What hunt are you gearing up for with the 45/70 350 ? Do they have brown bear hunts in Wyoming ? The 45/70 350 gr works well on the brown bear, best of luck on your hunt

Cheyenne, I noticed that Fotis did not answer your question about brown bear hunting in Wyoming. I am a long way from wyoming, but I looked up the wyoming hunting regulations and do not see the brown bear or grizzly listed. However other notifications printed by the state leave me to believe they do try to manage the number of grizzly's in the area and that they allow this to be done by hunters. Therefore, I am assuming they occasionally offer special tags or draws to achieve their goal. Hopefully a member from Wyoming will come along and give you a more precise answer.

Only Grizzlies Cheyenne but a long way away from me dear!

No grizzly hunting in the lower 48, not for some years now.

This may well change in the future as the grizzly population is growing steadily, and the bears are pushing out from Yellowstone, into nearby ranch land & National Forests.

Guy,

Some 45 years ago it was Park policy to trap-out the trouble-maker bears and transplant them about 100 miles to the south. In 1975, I saw the hide of a Griz hanging in a Wyoming ranch shed, after meeting his untimely death nearby.

And yes the old 45/70 still makes a comfortable buddy when riding the back trails.

Man I wish I could still get the 300 Partition!

Agree. This is one impressive bullet for the 45-70.
Maybe we can urge Nosler to make a short run. They will sell every one they make.

You know it JD!!!!

I would take 500 for sure!!!!

Thank you Europe, Fotis, Guy for the grizzly information.

Fotis, I believe northfork makes the 300 and we have found the northfork to be a pretty effective bullet. I was curious as to what you feel the 300 Nosler would give you the northfork would not. This is not an argumentative question, but an opportunity for me to learn. Also, you mentioned originally you were looking for a 350 for the 45/70, do you actually prefer the 300 because you would only hunt deer or antelope with it, although I believe the 45/70 with a 300 could also take elk and moose with no problem as long your within 200 yards of them. Just curious as the 45/70 is often used here, thank you

Phenomenal accuracy I got with it!

Never tried the NF so I can not compare but the 300 NP would go under well under 1/2 inch at 100 yards.

Thanks fotis, that is a darn good reason to wish they still made them. I know Scotty feels the same way about the Bitteroots and I suggested the northfork to him also. You might give them a try, I honestly think you would like them, Scotty did

Cheyenne,

I remember you telling me about a lead dog you had that got old and died. Every year when you start training for a race you mention, "god I wish I had that dog" but you dont. This is probably where Fotis is at with the 300 Nosler and Scotty with Bitteroot anything. Is the Northfork as good, possibly better, just like that puppy you bought last year might soon be the best lead dog you ever had. But some things, at least in one/s mind, are hard to replace, even if it is replaceable

I was using the 350g Speer Hot Cor with 48g H4198 in an 18 inch GBL. A real mild load at 1775fps.

I've still got a few left but am generally using 400-405g jacketed bullets these days with 47g of that powder for 1800-1825fps. Very accurate.

Great bullets but made to expand at 458 Win mag/Lott velocities

Yes Fotis I got exits on pigs of all sizes with the 350g Hot Cor, whereas with some softer 300 grainers like the Sierra they'd often not exit.

The Hot Cor still left exits around an inch however quite often.
