Any help for starting loads for this old cartridge with the 300 gr. Partition bullet? I have a Marlin 1895 lever-action rifle.

And thanks,

I personally use H322 for 2150 fps and 3/4" at 100 yards.
Start at 50 gr and work up.

Also RL-7 and H4198 works well. Start at 45 grains and work up

I shoot a .45/70 Marlin myself. Lots of fun.

When I'm shooting 300 grain loads, I generally stick with 55 grains of H4198. This jumps out of the 22" barrel at 2280 fps with decent accuracy and modest recoil. Normally I just practice with the far less expensive 300 grain Remington JHP's, which are a pretty good bullet, but the Nosler has an awesome reputation for deep penetration & game killing performance.

I think "Reflex" posted some good photos here of a guy who used the 300 Nosler in Africa sometime during this past summer. Believe he was only using 51 grains of H4198 for very good performance at 1950 fps from the 18" barreled Guide Gun.

Hodgdon lists the 55 gr H4198 charge at the top of their "Trapdoor" loads and as the starting point with their "Lever Action" loads - but that's with the 300 grain Sierra. I'd expect the 300 grain Nosler Partition to be a little different w/respect to pressure & velocity because of the different bullet construction.

Good advice GUy.

By the way mine is a 18.5" ported GG.

There's a few of us Lever Gun nuts around this place... Carried mine just the other day, looking for bear here in the Cascades:

No luck with the bear, but I always enjoy carrying & shooting the Marlin.

I filled my doe tag today with my 1895 Marlin 450 and a 400 gr. bullet, excellent performance.

Outstanding! The Speer 400 grainer?

Yes, its great bullet for deer. I wish we could get Nosler to give us a 400 gr. flat nose for our lever guns.
