45-70 Range Day

Mike,

Make sure you try H322.
59.0 grs with the 300 gr BST is 2050 fps with stellar accuracy and deadly on deer.

Gotcha! I'll see what I can grab for bullets as soon as the rifle is delivered. I have plenty of H322 on hand.

Goodness, I forgot your's was a GG. I though 2100+ from a 22" Classic was good, 2100+ from a GG is just cripple coon dog crazy!

Here is a 350gr slug I dug out of the oak block that I use to catch big bullets.  It is a little beat up, but still pretty good.  The core does come out of the jacket, but I will take it for that kind of penetration and a great price!  Scotty

I tell ya', these Guide Guns are infectious. They just keep infiltrating safes of people who frequent this forum. I'm gonna' put another lock on my safe. It is amazing how a 150 year-old cartridge can prove so addictive, effective and interesting.

It is pretty interesting Dr. Mike. I bought a stainless GG in .45-70 and took my oldest son to the range with it. Well to make a long story short, he now owns the GG and I have a 22 inch standard rifle 1895. They are infectious!

Excellent rifle Lou. I have a feeling you won't be let down by the rifle. I tell people how accurate mine is and they kinda scoff at the thought, until they see the targets. It really rivals alot of bolt guns out there, at least factory rifles. Plus, they have no doubts of effectiveness when they see those big holes in the target.

Your right Mike, these rifles are starting to catch on around here. Plus they are pretty darned easy to load for. My big paws appreciate those big cases and bullets that allow me enough purchase to not let em slip outta my hands, like those darned 243 and bullets! Scotty

Knowing the size of the log and how much it penetrated, that bullet doesn't look bad at all!!

I think it would do just fine for moose and such! Although, those 300gr PT's would be my preferred bullet if moose was on the menu. Scotty

Scotty, this well be my back up Moose gun, as you know...If we have the tags here in Ontario, I have a few hot spots for under 200 yd shots  ..45-70 well knock them down side ways  ....if not, i well use my trusty 338 WM for the longer shots 300 yds plus, either way im packing up both, Newfy is booked, but waiting for the tag results here first..Although I just got the 45-70, I ABSOLUTLY LOVE IT ALREADY!...should have got it long ago...Lou

Man, I told you. Hard to put that cannon down sometimes. Expect it to give your 338WM a run for carrying time. Mine rarely sits on the sidelines! Love that rifle. Can't wait to see how yours works Lou.

Is your serial number written on the side of the receiver or on the top strap where the stock attaches? Just wondering. Scotty

That is well put Heath. What a rifle. Makes you wish it was a 150 years ago and you were walking the Rocky's looking for elk, bear and buffalo! Scotty

You guys are awful I hope you know that. I've been fortunate enough to shoot a Marlin 45-70 a few times and my buddy Don's rolling-block Remington 45-70 that he had custom made. It was so much fun. Here's a picture of a pretty antelope buck he took at about 200 yards, one right through the lungs and he ran about 50 yards and dropped. It was pretty cool and I felt like we were out on the prairie 150 years ago. That action this rifle is built on is about that old! Now just stop all this talk or I'm afraid I might have to find one for me!

The guy I buy most of my guns from has his great grandfather's trapdoor 45/70 and still uses it. He loads 405gr cast over Unique. He said his people used it to kill most every animal walking in these hills, even carried .410 shells for grouse and turkey.

If I can't kill it with the 45-70 and proper bullets, I am too much of a chicken to hunt it! It is a sweet big bore. Love the versatility in the cartridge and there is a ton of good factory ammo as well. Scotty

David, you would love a 45-70. Plus with holes that big you stand a good chance of hitting the bullseye in your ONE AND DONE contest!!!! Scotty
