For those that helped me with some issues I was having with reloading my 45-70 with the new silver tip bullets here is an update.

My son and I went to Texas, near Waelder, to do some hog hunting. The trip was a present for his graduation and had been much anticipated by both of us. We arrived about three in the afternoon got settled into camp and had a briefing about the rules and regulations. After supper we went out to sit on stand, we were allowed to hunt at night for the hogs. We sat on a bait pile and saw several elk come in, some axis deer and a few fallow deer. There was a small group of hogs that started to come in but they were super spooky and never gave us a shot. Day two was spot and stalk and we did score on two 100 pound pigs. The 45-70 shells worked great. Once I get the pics from my son I will post.

Thanks again to everyone who helped me figure out my problem. I owe you all, hopefully I will be able to help some of you out sometime.

Good to hear. Looking forward to the pictures.

Sounds awesome. Looking forward to hearing about the trip! Man, the 45-70 is picking up some steam! Mike - Woodycreek, you two better get on board! I don't want you fellers to get left behind from all the fun! Scotty

Brian,

I have never steered you wrong!
Go with the 1895 Guide gun. Mount a Leupold VX-3 1.75-6x32mm in Leupold standard mount and don't look back!

I'm on it! But somebody keeps helping me change my mind on which model i should get!

Just get the Guide Gun buddy! Easy day. You will be shooting little groups with thumb sized lead in no time. I would get the Xs rail though and Leupold QRW rings. I like the ability to use iron sights if I was so inclined. Both are rock solid set ups though. Scotty

I think Brian is in a dilemma right now. He wants a 1895 standard with a 22" barrel for better balance or an XLR for the SS/Lam look. I can't blame him. I told him he could always chop the barrel on the XLR down to 22, 20 or even 18.5 (which would have been my route had I not found mine so quick and inexpensive). Either way, all of them are pretty nice. I am pretty sure he is going to cave shortly though! I will take mine down when I head to his area and maybe we can shoot some of the 425's I have loaded up! I am pretty sure that will make him a believer! Scotty

The XLR is very nice! You won't be disappointed in hte Marlin 1895 or the mighty 45-70.

The XLR is certainly a handsome rifle. One could do a whole lot worse if they wanted a 45-70. I've shot a couple, and they were well balanced and gave good groups with factory ammunition. The 24 inch barrel makes the rifle attractive for me. I just like the longer barrel.

It is something to consider. I was impressed with how pleasant the 22" standard version of the 1895 is to shoot after a few years of tolerating the Guide Gun. The 24" XLR might be even more pleasant to live with.

But doggone - I sure was surprised when I found out how much those new XLR's are going for! Ouch! All of a sudden the good old Marlin lever gun has gotten very expensive!

We are seeing the XLR's here in Va for around 650 at a couple different places. I think GG's are going for around 500 in most stores also. I kinda like the longer barrels also and was a little hesitant of the GG, but after seeing how accurate it was and how handy it is while walking through brush and sitting in a blind, I really like the compactness of it. Plus, it is such a nice carrying rifle too! Scotty

I had a 450 Marlin in the XLR. That lasted a month. Not the dimensions you want a lever to be. Very unwieldy!

I have talk to Scotty alot about this rifle buy and its going to be after hunting season. That way i don't rush into buying one that i know i will do! Also need to find a gunshop that has both the 22" and the XLR 24" that i can put side by side.

Yes the 45-70 is gaining a following again and making a real come back. I am very happy with my single shot New England Arms but I do have an itch for one of the lever guns. I may have to see if Uncle Sam can fund one with a tax refund, LOL!!!

Hope ya'll have a great new year.

I may have to see if Uncle Sam can fund one with a tax refund.

I'd think that Uncle Obama would be thrilled to think that you would use "his" money in that way. It is stimulating the economy, and that is his focus!

I would love to have a 1895XLR and then I would have it cut down to 18.5". I really like my Guide Gun, but I like the pistol grip stocks mo better.
