anybody have any suggestions on bullets for the 458wm?
my reamer just showed up and I'm excited to light this baby off!
seems like some of the 45-70 offerings are a bit frangible at 458 velocities, and I really don't want to shoot solids.....

The 500 grain Partition at almost 2100 fps would be a ferocious load for about anything that you might ever hunt.

Depends on what your going to shoot with it. The Cutting Edge brass bullets have been working well for a buddy of mine. I shot a few in my Lott and they did well.

I would use either 400 gr TB Bear Claw, Cape Shok, or 500 gr TB Sledge hammer solids if I was hunting in Africa.

I believe Hornady still makes the 350 gr round - nose soft point, it was intended for a reduced weight bullet for the .458 Win mag. A lot of .45/70 guys have used it over the years as well, but yes, it was intended for the .458, and it's relatively inexpensive (if you can find it).

Also Hornady still makes their traditional 500 gr round nose soft point I believe. Another relatively inexpensive bullet that should prove great for target practice and it's been used on many hunts.

I have some of the 300 gr .375" Hornady round nose soft point & fmj bullets. They're nothing fancy, but they do shoot well.

I was going to say,,,that Hornady makes the 350 which was designed for magunum capacity cartridge's. It would do for most NA big game, however I would prefer something heavier for big bears.

One can make cast to work. If fit is right, mag velocity can be had without leading. 4-500 grainers would be cool. The Nosler Partition is hard to beat for the money.

What will be it's primary Mission?

I, for instance, have a 458 lott. I went with the 350 TSX at 2750 fps. Just about good for everything everywhere.

actually..... If I ever hunt with it..... it'd probably be used for black bear, maybe bison.

I agree with Fotis on his Lott load!

For plinking and hunting those 2 critters, the 405 gr. Remingon and Speer would do too. The Rem. is a little stouter. Or cast again. Hard to beat the cost factor if you shoot the big bores a lot. Buying commercial cast? I would go back to the Rem. and Speer, or NPT. Mostly because with my own cast, I can alter to suit my needs, and the rifles wants.

It's been many years since I owned a .458 Win. Mag. When I did though I shot the 500 gr. Hornady round nose soft point and a 500 gr. cast bullet from a Lee mold. It was a fun gun for a while and then I gave it to a friend of mine who planned to go to Africa. That was back around 177 or 1978 IIRC. For some reason I don't miss that one.

350 TSX would cover you for everything.

So would the speer 350.
