6.5 Creedmoor...hunting ammunition choices.

This is something of a corollary to my Barrett Fieldcraft post. I need to start working with ammunition to prep for this August's caribou hunt. Due to professional and academic commitments, probably going to stick to factory offerings and would like to get some input from the folks here...

There are quite a few hunting bullet offerings now for this round and I'd like to narrow it to two or three, do some testing, and get hunting.

The rifle has an 18" barrel, so that limits velocity in a somewhat slow cartridge even more. The good news is, the 6.5s hold on to what they've got reasonably well. Pretty sure tougher, controlled expansion bullets are going to be less than ideal with a MV of 2600ish or maybe even less with 143gr loads.

That said- I'm not looking for true long range potential either-I'm just not that interested in what bullets will do at 500 yards or more. I'm (more or less) looking for something to shoot meat caribou, Sitka deer, possibly sheep out to 300 or so but most likely not under 100 yards.

Bullets I've had recommended are the Hornady 143 ELDX Precision Hunter, the Nosler BT 140gr, the Nosler ABLR 127gr, the newer Barnes LRTX and the Hornady SST.

I've got to admit- I tend to worry about bullet blow up, but with these mild speeds that might be overthinking it.

Any ideas from the folks here who've used it?

Hornady has a GMX load for the Creedmoor. I think it's a 120 gr. Might be a nice load.

The American Whitetail has always done great with the 129 sp for me.

At those sorta slower speeds I'd look at the 143 ELD's and see how they shoot. They are pretty soft sorta bullets and might work amazing and hold onto speed the best. Lots of great choices for the 6.5 CM these days. Seems like any of the cup and cores should work excellent.

Nosler offers a factory load with the 140 gr BT.

You might also look at the 155 gr Mega bullet for good killing power from a shorter barrelled rifle...been thinking of it for the Ruger No.1 RSI when I finally get one. It may be slower but should transfer energy like Thor's Hammer!
