I got back from the woods this morning with my biggest whitetail ever. I sat in a stand that sits right between a large oak bottom and a pine thicket. I've had excellent luck in this stand and shot a good buck last year out of it. About a week or so ago, I started getting pictures of one of the biggest bucks I've ever seen on this property. We got a ton of rain and roughly a quarter of the property got flooded. I think it pushed this guy out of his normal stomping grounds. The weather and wind were perfect the last two days and I sat this stand yesterday as well. I saw lots of bucks, but not the one. The temps dropped ten degrees since yesterday and felt even better about this morning's hunt.
The morning started off slow for me while my buddy was covered in deer including a nice 8 pt he passed up and he got glimpses of a bigger buck chasing a doe. Around 825 AM, a very nervous spike came out and was cruising the two trails/shooting lanes. At 832, I caught movement at the far end of one of the trails and saw a rack. Even with the naked eye I knew it was the buck I've been hoping for! I put up the rifle but could only partially see him through some brush as he was facing me. He disappeared for a few agonizing seconds before walking back into view and heading my way. He turned broadside at 70 yards and I sent a 140gr Partition through both lungs. He made it 40 yards with a huge blood trail!
I used the same gun and load as my buck from just over a week ago. Tikka T3x Stainless Hunter in 6.5x55 Swede with the 140gr Partition. This has been such a great combo! Man what a morning!
