Does anyone have any load data using the 64 gr BSB in the 223 or 5.56? I will be shooting this in an AR platform in either a 1/9 or a 1/7 barrel.

Thanks

Here are my chronograph results from a 16 inch 1-9 twist, NATO chamber, with the64 grain bonded solid base. Dont have data here for the CFE223 with Remington 7 1/2 primer, will try to add it later. Made all the difference int he world with CFE. Dont even bother with the CCI450, too hot a primer with most of these powders despite its otherwise good reputation with the AR15 platform. I standardized on CFE223 at about 2900 fps, WW brass and Remington 7 1/2 primer. The max load in Nosler manual, which is a SAMMI loading (not NATO) gives you 2750 fps from a 16 inch barrel. I dont know why Nosler does not publish data for the AR at NATO pressures for all of its bullets. It is after all the most popular rifle in America.

Jim,

I found my data with Remington 7 1/2 primer. Made a big difference in consistancy. Ive loaded several hundred of these now. It is my std load. Not quite as accurate as Win 748 or RL 15 at 2800 fps but for 125 fps extra velocity I will take it.

FBI ammo loaded by Winchester chronographs about 2830 fps from my 16 inch barrel. So CFE reload is faster but still slower than either Mk318 or M855, and probably safe. No signs of rapid loss of case life, or ejector marks in my two rifles. Wish Nosler would publish NATO pressure loads for the 223/556.

Been trying to find some CFE 223 but no luck. But I have secured some AA2460 powder and loaded up a batch ranging from 23.0 grs to 25.4 grs. Will chrono tomorrow and report the results. Trying to load to NATO pressure and velocity.

Jim, I would be surprised if you got more than 2800 fps from a 16 inch even at NATO pressure using NATO LC brass with that powder.

By all means try it an please post results here.

If you can find Win 748 or RL 15 you can get that much velocity or more at exceptional accuracy. Common powders in most parts of the country.

Andrewctillman, GREAT info. Thanks.

The little .223/5.56 loses a fair bit of velocity when confined to a shorter barrel. Still an awful lot of fun to shoot, and useful too.

Regards, Guy

Guy, nothing really wrong with 2750 fps. That is what you get on a warm day with Federal Fusion MSR in a 16 inch. Fusion is also a SAMMI rather than NATO load.

Most people dont realize how different a 556 nato and 223 remington are from each other. the nato loading makes a 223 look more like a 222. The nato chamber has a long throat. I tell people to think of it as a 223 weatherby! (meaning it has alot of free bore).

Hornady is one of few ammo makers who load 223 remington and nato ammo and sell it to the public. It is a liaility issue I realize and really a tower of babel in many ways. But the black rifle is the most popular rifle in the USA now for many years and Nosler is loosing customers to Hornady and Barnes who publish both 223 remington and nato loads.

The nosler manual only stresses 69 and 77 custom competition loads for the ar15, yet most ar owners are not nra service rifle comeptitors.

The 64 grain bonded solid base is such a good bullet it really deserves a work up by nosler staff in the nato chamber. Nosler has won the FBI contract twice, first with the 60 grain PT and now with the 64. They should be proud of that, advertise it, and publish nato pressure loads. It would be good business and good for the brand.

They may be reluctant to push a trophy bonded style bullet but the 556 is such a pip squeak, you need to halt expansion to get the desired penetration, and most premium bullet reloaders can understand that.

OK, so here are my results with AA2460.

64 gr NSB, AA 2460 , Tula SRP, LC brass, 2.180" oal, crimped into cannelure with Lee Collet crimper, 90 deg Louisiana afternoon.

AR 15, 16" barrel, 1/7 twist, Eotech Optic

23.0 gr - 2647 fps, 2611 fps, 2647 fps
24.0 grs - 2727 fps, 2699 fps, 2742 fps
24.5 grs - 2806 fps, 2782 fps, 2838 fps
25.0 grs - 2853 fps, 2828 fps, 2854 fps
25.4 grs - 2900 fps, 2903 fps, 2988 fps

I did not see any signs of pressure at all. The primers start to finish looked the same.

Regarding group size, I was shooting at a 100 yard target but with a non-magnified optic, Eotech, all my groups were in the 3 inch neighborhood which is sufficient for this rifle. As I load more, I may clamp on a 4x scope and see what groups I get.

Just for comparison, I ran 2 rounds of Win 5.56, M885, 62 gr factory and chrono'd 2954 fps.

All in all, I am satisfied with the results and plan to load up a major batch at 25.4 grs.

Nice.

My AR-15, also a 16" model but with a 1-4x Leupold, carries real easy. I keep having thoughts of using it this coming winter on coyotes, and perhaps walking the tracks of a cougar, hoping for a shot... Have a good stash of these 64's and can't think of any reason why that wouldn't work great on a cougar...

I just re-looked at my brass from the 25.4 gr loads and noticed a slight ejector mark on the brass. I might drop down to 25.0 or 25.2 grs to be safe .

Jim, there are others here more experienced than I to discuss this but at first glance it looks like you are increasing velocity about 10 fps per tenth grain between 24.5 and 25.0 and doubl that when going from 25.0 to 25.4 grains.

I would not exceed 2900 fps average which will probably be closer to 25.1 or 25.2 grains.

Remember, factory nato pressure ammo is going 2830 fps from a 16 inch.

Not to say you dont have one of a few magic powders or combination of reloading components we all look for.

I think you will find much better than 3 inch groups w your scope or taking a six ocolock hold on a bullseye with good metallic sights. 4895 and BLC2 gave me 3 inch groups but low pressure. Other powders much better groups without loosing too much velocity.

Thanks for sharing.

This is well timed for me thanks all. I just ordered some 2nds from SPS in prep for my son's 1st deer hunt. He really likes my AR so I am hoping this projectile will shine.

What does Nosler list as it's optimal velocity window for expansion/integrity balance? My shots will be short range & I'd like to me sure to get exits since underbrush is pretty thick during our early youth hunts.

I've got the 70 gr Speer shooting really well with a pretty sedate charge of Ramshot XTerminator. That is a good deer bullet from what I've been told, but to be honest I'm a little uncomfortable chasing big game with a tiny little guy labeled "varmint" even though I know several w/ 1st hand experience.

Thanks all,

Efw

EFW, you can see what an expanded 64 grain looks like in the bullet test section. Great expansion, weight retention and penetration (about 17 inches) which is max you can get with a 223.

Speer not even close to same class as a 64 bonded solid base.

Only other bullets I would use for deer would be 55 - 64 grain TBBC, or 70 grain TSX.

They will not blow up at any velocity you can shoot them from a 223. There are several folks here who use them in a 22-250 and they even hold up to that.
