Was lucky enough to win a raffle gun @the the elk foundation banquet last weekend. Got me a thompson center venture in 7mm 08 caliber. I have no idea or have ever looked @the this caliber. Give me something to go on. Thanks.
One of my hunting partners (now moved to Saskatchewan) used a 7mm-08 to take about every type of game to be found in my AO. He used a 145 grain Speer Grand Slam for everything, and it worked pretty well for him. I would think you have one of the finest little cartridges to come down the pike in recent years. I wouldn't hesitate to use 140 grain ABs or 150 grain PTs to tackle about anything up here.
My Wife's Savage loves the 120 gr. BT's. We reload it with varget and it shoots under 1/2" moa. It also shoots 139 gr. Interbonds and 140 Accubonds just under moa. Either of them will take elk cleanly. Your going to love that gun!
Couple more pics I found for you. Cant seem to find an AccuBond target. All these groups are repeatable and done without any coal adjustment. I have found this rifle loves about anything I feed it. The 120 gr. load is just under 1 1/2" at 300 yds.
My Browning X-bolt in 7mm-08 seemed to like BT bullets but not SST bullets. I developed a very accurate and reproducable load using H-4350 and 140 BT's. It did pretty good with factory Winchester Supreme loads with the CTBST and the older factory Hornady light magnums with the 139 gr. BTSP. I found I had to adjust the OAL for each change in the powder charge. But, I could get MOA with multiple powder charges of H-4350. Good luck with it.
My rem 700 shoots literally every bullet I try in it well. For elk I would reiterate that grand slam in 145 and the AccuBond in 140. I load both over h4350 and have seen elk taken with both. I did put a mb on mine and my tiny 13 year old daughter can handle it. My rifle seems to love h 4350 but my favorite load for it is a 100 gr varmint bullet and blc2. Oh yeah, it handles the 150 ablr well too!
And just because I could, I went and shot them both side by side in the jug test this morning. I posted it in bullet test section-great results from both
Firebird, I'd give RL17 a try if you can find some. It's working really well in my boys 7x57 speed wise. Pretty sure with some seating adjustment it'll be a good load.
I like the 7-08 . I think it's a dandy deer hunting cartridge . fun to shoot , easy on the shoulder , and I've found it to be very easy to load for . with components being hard to get I think you made a good choice in this cartridge . I have three of them . I have a tikka 595 , that I'm shooting 139 BTSP with IMR4064 powder getting around 2800FPS . I have a rem 700 with a broughton bbl that I'm shooting Berger 140 hunting VLD's with RL 17 powder getting around 3080 FPS . then I have my girlfriends Browning X- bolt using 120 ballistic tips with a reduced load of H4895 no chrony info . all will shoot well under an inch at 100 yards . my opinion , I don't think the 7-08 has the case capacity for using heavy bullets . I did play with Berger 168 hunting VLD's , it was slow . I stupidly pushed it waaaaaay past max powder load to get the velocity up . case life was short , and the accuracy was not there . when I dropped back to a more acceptable powder charge the accuracy came around , but the bullet dropped like a rock at longer distances . I never played with bullets in the 150 grain range , this could be a happy medium .
this is the whole target shot @ 200 yards
center dot on target . Tikka using IMR4064 with a 139 BTSP @ 200 yards .
upper right on target . rem using 140 VLD's with RL17 @200 yards
X-bolt shot @ 100 yards . reduced load of H4895 with a 120 ballistic tip .
rem shooting 168 VLD's with RL17 powder @ 400 yards . I shot 3 let the rifle cool and conditions must have changed , or I got the jerks , for the other two shots . you can see the velocity I was getting with a safe powder charge .
