wat is the best load for the 7mm rem mag i was looking at 162 grain btsp by hornady and was wondering wat the best powder was i was thinking of the imr 7828 ssc how much powder should i use and about how fast will they go. any help thanks

Work up to 66 gr of RL22 or 7828 in small increments. In a 24" barrel you should break 3000 fps.

RL 22 is a great powder for the 7mm Rem Mag.

If those don't work, try H4831sc. It might not be quite as good on velocity, but the accuracy will probably be there.

Have had great success w/160 - 175 grain bullets with Reloader 22, as well as with H4831 and the 7mm Rem mag. 3000 fps is a reasonable goal with those powders and bullets of about 160 grains. BTW - have you considered the 160 Nosler Partition or the AccuBond?

Pity the old H870 is about gone - that too was a great powder for heavier bullets in the 7mm Rem mag. I really liked it with the 175 gr Nosler Partition at over 2900 fps!

thanks for all of the information. with the 162 i have been using with imr 7828 with 66 gr of it what is the max load with that powder and that bullet and also will the ssc make it go any faster and more accurate thanks. i have also been using imr 7828 with the 140 gr nosler ballistic tips with 70.3 gr at over 3225 they have been shooting very well but i want a bigger bullet for when shooting much larger game. thanks

We have used the 140gr BT or PAR with 70gr of RL19 for 3280FPS or 72grs of RL22 for 3275FPS. If we used 66 grs of IMR-4831 we got 3086FPS or 66grs of IMR-4350 for 3158FPS with my Ruger tang safety rifle at 20ft from the muzzle. These RL19 &22 loads are MAX. They have also taken quite a few deer/pronghorns/elk and a few ground squirrels.

I have just kind of finished up load development for the 7mm Rem Mag w/ 160gr AccuBond. Everybody recommended working up to 66gr of R22, and man, after I worked it a little, it is a great shooting combo. I use H870 in my older 7mm Rem Mag, since I still have 3lbs left and it likes the stuff. R22 is my new go to powder for the 300 mag and 7mm Mag's. They seem to shine. Scotty

Oh, I do, that was the first powder I worked with in my 7mm Mag, and by God, I put a big Moose, caribou, and a gang load of deer down with that powder behind Barnes bullets. It shoots really well for me. I shot some Noslers too, but I could only find the 140's and I thought I needed more weight, so I went with 160 Barnes X's.. Almost everything I shot with 870 is still a good memory. I still have enough to take care of my old rifle, so that is what I use it for. Scotty

Too bad they got rid of it, seemed like such a great powder, what actually replaced it? Scotty

That is a great bullet. We have killed dozens of head of game from antelope to elk.

My load was 79gr of H870.

Seems like the 7mm Mag and H870 were synonymous at one point. I know it was a very accurate, and clean powder for me. Plus it flowed through a measure like water. Was it replaced with HS869? Scotty

Just got some 160 Nosler Partitions for use from my 7mm Rem mag Number One. Taking it for bear in September. Will be working with Reloader 22, looking for good accuracy at 300 yards and enough zip to get the job done.

I do like "my" Nosler Partitions...

Agree. Was at 65 grains with excellent results with a previous 7mm Rem mag... This rifle is new to me though. Somewhere around 64 - 66 grains should do quite nicely.

For some reason my rem 700 7 mag likes RL-22 with 160g bullets at around 61g. Its usually around 2850-2900fps with many different 160g bullets. Accuracy is usually .5" for 3 shots at 100 yards though. I went up to 65g and got 3025fps but that was pushing it in my rifle. Groups were not as good either. I just cant seem to get my 7 mag to shoot the 160g very well at the upper end. I'd like 3000fps.

I'm going to switch to the 154g or 162g SST though so will have to see how they do. I did some minimal testing with the 162g sst a while back and got some groups that were .75" so I think they have some potential. Mainly seeing how well I can get the 154g to shoot as thats the bullet I really would like to stick with for all around bullet in my 7 mag for coyote/antelope/deer/elk/black bear.

I have been shooting 66gr's of R22 out of my WBY 7mm Rem Mag with 160gr Abonds, and they shoot really well. I need to take it out to the 200 yard line, and start fine tuning it, but I think it is going to do okay. R22 and the 7mm Rem Mag seem to be a really good shooting combo. I think it is max for my rifle, but I don't show any signs of sticky bolt or flattened primers. I would like to make this load ready for long range elk. Scotty
