I think I may try working with my 7mm Rem Mag and I was curious what powder you guys would recommend? I searched the board and found RL22, H1000, and H4831 to be popular. I have over a pound of H4831 and I can get the other two. I am thinking of a 140-150gr probably a ballistic tip as all I am probably going to do is punch paper with it if I can get it to group. The only drawback there is, it's a Ruger. It has a 24" barrel also.

Thanks

My best shooting 7mm mag load was 63 gns rl22 with a 160 grn bullet. This load was fast and always under moa. Hope this helps.....

RL 22 works realy good with 160s and 175s I like RL 19 for 140s and IMR 7828 works good for the 150s and their is nothing wrong with Ruger rifles I have a few and they all shoot quite well.

63.8grains of RL-19 & 140gr AccuBonds give me under .5MOA..... That's with an " early " 70's Rem 700

H4831 and 140-150gr BT make a nice combination in the 7mm mag. If that's what I had, that's what I'd start with. If I was going to try a second Powder, Probably RL22. It's very versitle, and can be used in a lot of different guns. If on the other hand I had other Magnums, I'd add H1000 to the cabnet.

I like RL22 for 160gr AB in my 26" barrelled Rem 700 CDL, but have not tested H1000 and IMR 7828. I have plans of testing them, but would think those would be some of the best. I would think H4831 would be a good powder for 140s and 150s. RL25 and slower would probably be a waste of time with a 24" barrel, but it could work since very gun is different.

Well, I shot some factory loads to get some brass, pretty crappy. The gun has been floated out and has a trigger job, 175gr Rem Corelokts fell into a 6-7" group at 50yds, yes 6-7" group at 50yds. I had some 139gr Hornady BTSP they didn't suck as bad with a 1.5" group at 50yds. I have never had a rifle shoot this bad, I know two loads is a small sample, but you have to admit those are some bad groups. Do you guys think that handloads will help? Obviously it can't hurt, LOL!

Thanks for the replies

RL 22 by far. However you can try H4831. Start at 60 gr for all bullets from 120-160 grains.

Got some 140 NBTs today, wanted some 150-160's but no. Anyways, I figure since I have 4831 I will try it. started at 61grs and went up to 67grs, the most accurate was 63grs. I never got any sign of pressure and according to Sierra I was 1.5grs over max, 67 showed some promise if I wanted to pursue it. Velocity sucked, 67gr gave me 2950fps, I know velocity ain't everything, but if you are going to shoot a magnum it needs to perform like one. I read where people took H4831 to 70grs with the 140's??? RL22 is on the list, one ting this did was make me change my mind to keep the gun. Factory stuff was so bad I was going to sell it or trade it, not anymore.

Thanks for the help guys, it was appreciated.

My win 70 loves IMR4350 with 140 ballistic tips and RL22 with 160 partitions. I get 3111 average fps with the 140s and it groups under a half inch. May want to give this powder a try next.

Thanks YoteSmoker.

My Ruger has a 1/9.5" twist rate, is this fast enough to handle the heavier stuff, 160-175's?

Thanks

I've loaded for and shot a 7mmRemMag with IMR7828ssc and AAMagPro, and I can tell you that MagPro gave decent velocities, around 2950fps for a 160gr AccuBond from a 26" barrel. The 7828ssc was not as impressive, but I was working up from a different manual, and I didn't go to max yet, as I knew the AB had a much longer bearing surface than the bullet in the manual I was using. I also loaded some 175gr Hornady Spire Points, and was able to achieve mediocre velocity from them. I will be working on them again in the future, when my buddy with the rifle wants to go back to the range. I hope to get out there sometime within the next two weeks.

I'd take a look at MagPro, as it offers some great velocities and is easy to load with. Accuracy was not terrible (around 1.5") but I don't consider that great, either. I suspect 1" is possible with some serious tweaking of COL and exact powder charge.

Well my Savage 7mm Mag shoots well with 140 gr. and 150 gr. BT. using IMR 4350 powder. I'm using Nosler brass. Just recently bought some 150 gr. BT. from Shooters Pro Shop And Nosler brass ,which I'm going to load later with IMR 4320 powder. I'm stuck on IMR powder. Don't knock the Ruger rifle,it's a good gun. If I was to buy another gun,it woud be a Browning A-Bolt. Good luck with your Mag.

Noslers Rock!

i had a 1-11" twist barrel, it shot 120gr and 140gr great. i now have a 1-9" twist, it would throw 4" patterns with the loads for the 1-11" barrel. now i shoot 160gr and am working up a load using re22 and sierra 175gr btsp. max loads, depending on the book you read are from 60gr to 64.8 my first test load shot a .9" 3 shot group at 2835fps at 62gr re22. no pressure signs in my gun, so i have 2 more tests loaded at 63gr and 64gr. noslers max load is 62.5 for the 175gr Partition, listed at 2970fps 24" barrel. my rifle has a 26" pacnor match grade barrel. my goal is 1/2minute at 2900fps
