I have a chance too get a new 7MM RM barrel for my encore pro-Hunter still in the original packaging for $175.00. What's the recoil like for this caliber? I have a wide variety of 7MM bullets and powders on hand, coming up with a load for it shouldn't be a problem.

I believe it fair to say that free recoil of a 7RM can be compared to a 30-06. This is dependent on stock design, weight of the rifle, projectile weight, etc.

I agree with Mike, recoil of the 7mmRM is about the same as a 30-06.
In the field, you won't even notice it.

For me, it's very .30-06ish, if that's something you are familiar with. I would say a 7mag is about the most that a normal, non-enthusiast can handle, recoil wise.

Thanks everyone! I'm going too think about it for a couple days and decide if I'm going to get it or not?

What would you use the 7mm RM for?

With 140 gr bullets, it is fast and flat for deer and antelope. A 140 gr PT is pterry tough and has been used on elk.
The 160 gr AB has a high BC for long range shoting but is tough and will smash shoulderd of elk and moose. The 160 gr PT is perfect for elk and moose. The 175 gr PT is more than enough for a grizzly bear.

I've used the 175 PT and TBBC for about every game in British Columbia, and I've also used the 160 Fail Safe and Partition for moose, elk and mule deer. I haven't had many head of game walk far after a swat with any of these.

I shoot the 160 Partitions handloaded to about 3060 fps in my 7mm Rem Mag My rifles for both the 7mm Rem Mag and my Model 70 .30-06 both weigh about the same and have the same recoil as nearly as I can judge, using the 165 Partition bullet in the .30-06.

It would most likely be used as a backup rifle for hunting out west. I mainly use my 300 WSM and my 280 Rem for a backup gun in case the 300 went down for some unforeseen reason.

I can't add to what's been said other than,,,,,if nothing else at that price, it would be a good investment.
If you don't take it, let me know where it's at.

I personally feel you should think on this deal seriously ..It's quite profitable investment..So you should not leave it and go for it..

My experiences also mirror this.

I'm now the proud owner of a 7MM RM! I called the guy last night and told him I'd pick it up this weekend. At that price it was just too hard to pass up.

Good for you. It is truly in the "Classic" status group.

Congratulations, tecumseh. I don't believe you'll regret this chambering.

Shoot a couple of big deer with the 160 Partition bullet and you will no longer have any doubts about the 7mm Rem Mag being a DRT rifle for deer.

It will probably be a month or two before I get it ready too shoot, I need to get a scope, base and rings, dies and brass for it.
