Nobody ever reads what I spend so much time trying to type and explain. Why do I bother? The actual difference between the 7mm Rem Mag and the .280 Remington with the 160 Nosler Partitions bullet is 8 grains of IMR 7828 SSC.

I did, and found your results most interesting.

Still, the fact that the 7mm RM holds 8 more grains of that particular powder means that it will be able to push the bullet faster when loaded to the same pressure.

Supposedly, and the 7mm Mag will get about 50-60 fps more than the .280 in real life. I would just as soon load the .280 to 3000 fps and put up with less, sturm und drang, noise and flash for only 50 fps less. The .280 shoulder is .050 forward of the .30-06 or the .270 Win. This is why the .280 can approxomate the 7mm Mag.

I have never owned a 7 mm/08. Why would I? I have owned several 280"s and various 7 mm mags. They will do anything a 08 will do only better. Now having said that, I am sure that for a deer rifle, or for someone sensitive to recoil, that it will fill the bill more than adequately. "Any" 7 mm at moderate speeds will get the job done, they are a fine group of cartridges.

Right now I have sold my ,280 to my grandson and all I have is a 7mm Rem Mag. This particular rifle is fully custom and I have had it for nearly 40 years (1973) so it is staying in my gun safe and has a permenent place, despite the fact that I would rather have a .280 rifle wih a 24 inch barrel and not the magnum.

I have both, and they both have a 22" barrel. The 7-08 give 2750 FPS with Nosler Custom 140 AB factory loads and the 280 gives 2925 FPS with the 150 grain E Tip. That is with published load data, it is also more accurate than my 7-08. I'm not much for arguing, I like both, but the 7-08 is not going to bring the same velocity as the 280. No two ways around it.

If i had an 08 loaded with a 150 gr PT, I wouldn't hesitate too take an Elk, Moose or any other critter that roams the woods out to 250 yards!

The devotees of the .280 and those of the 7mm-08 seem to be divergent and independent populations which do not overlap in rifle caliber choices. Interesting.
