A little help would be appreciated. I have acquired for fun a Remington 7400 in 30/06 with the synthetic stock and has only been fired a few times, and is in "like new" condition. I am wanting suggestions for loads with H4895 and 165gr bullets. NO! I am not living under any delusions concerning the issues with the 7400, but as some of you know I am into reloading for all kinds of guns, but before I begin with this rifle and H4895 I would like some impute that could save me a lot of time and trouble. I will be trying first the 165gr Sierra Game King SBT and HPBT and the 165gr Sierra Game changer. Thank you, it has been a while since I was on the forum. :grin:
 
I don't think you will have any issues with the 7400. I had one in .270 awhile, and it was 100% reliable! Higher pressure than Garand 30-06 levels too! But, no need to beat the rifle up! I used the old Federal Red Box ammo (1979) that used the Sierra 165, in a Mod 742 30-06. I would pick a load that shot 2700-2750 fps with IMR 4064. It is a good powder for autos anyhow. If you want to, use Hodgdon or IMR 4350 and start at 56gr. Work up to 58gr in 1/2 grain increments. Good luck to you pard!

Thank you for the response and I appreciate it. I have 6 one pound of H4895 and 16 pounds of H4350 but not any 4064 so I want to see if H4895 can do it and H4350 might be a little to slow unless I use a 180gr bullet. Preacher, what to you think about the two powders I have mentioned? Here is a minimum and max load H4895 43.0 gr. 2,607
H4895 47.5 gr. 2,782 max

I'm shoot 47.5 grains of H4895 with 165 grain Hornady and it has been a very reliable load in my M1 Garand. It should function well in a 7400 as well.

Thank you so much grry10, I was hoping someone shooting a semi auto rifle would have a 165gr load used with H4895 and one they had success with. Once again thank you because this confirms my estimations and calculations concerning the use of H4895 and a 165gr bullet.
 
I have found a few friends of mine who belong to the same shooting club and range that I do and they have used H4895 with the 165gr Sierra bullets and have had success with it in accuracy with 22" barrels on their 7400's. I will begin with 46.1 and work up to 47.1 since no pressure signs were experienced by my friends with no flatten primers or ejection problems and both had groups that ranged from 7/8ths of and inch to 1.3" at 100yds. I will use the most accurate load of my work up while not considering velocity. I will also use the DNZ one pice mounting system because it is very light at the same time very strong and will bring added rigidity to the receiver and control and limit any flexibility of the receiver to enhance accuracy.
 
I've never used the 7400, but I figure that H4895 and a 165 gr bullet is a great way to go!

Since this is the Nosler forum... I'd recommend the tried & true 165 gr Nosler Partition.

But the Sierra is a good bullet too.

Are small base dies a good idea when handloading for this rifle? I don't know.

Guy, you know I am a user of Nosler bullets, like in my 6.5 creedmoor 129gr LRAB and my M48 30 Nosler rifle 210gr LRAB. I will be trying the 165gr Ballistic tip after I try the Sierra bullets in the second round of reloading because at the velocities I will be getting the Sierra bullets and the ballistic tip will work better and the Partition is a struggle at times to get good accuracy, more so in a semi auto than a bolt rifle. Small base dies will not be needed in the case of the 7400, but will have to full size and trim the brass each time I use them.

Don't have the Game Changer in my data set for QL. Doesn't appear to be any significant difference in the HPBT and the SPBT, however. I shouldn't imagine that the pressures projected would cause you any trouble in your 7400.
 
Shoot, looking at this data I may have to try some H4895 in my 06 with 165's.. Looks fairly speedy..
 
I'm using H4895 with 150 Speer HotCor bullets in my 7400, hopefully finishing up a load tomorrow. Looks like it should (?) be under at inch at 100 once I'm done; we will see.

Yes, 150 is a light bullet for a 30-06, but the 7400 is not my long range rifle, just my Michigan woods rifle.

SJB358, I agree, I am going to use this data for my bolt 30/06 and see what happens.
 
Can never go wrong with H4895! Its temp stable and easy to get accuracy with! Good luck to you Pard!

Glad to be back Fotis, thanks! Life changed for me for about three years and hopefully I will be back into reloading and hunting as well as writing again. Your Tikka T3 SL is shooting excellent with that load. That would work in my bolt action 06 but the powder is to slow for good work in my 7400.
 
Actually Mike 4350 series is the "beginning" to slower powders. I have used IMR 4350 (57 gr) with 165's in a 7400 with no issues. That said if you want to stick with 4895 I can see the appeal.

I like !MR4350 but only have H4350 and prolonged use of 4350 can stress a semi auto and its action in 30/06 with 165 and lighter grain bullets. IMR4350 is a perfect power for 170 and for sure 180gr and above.
