A blast from my past Remington 7400 30/06 using H4895

Mike,
Welcome back! I had a 742 ADL carbine in 30-06 years ago that would shoot well under MOA with 150 gr and and 180 gr bullets with IMR 4350.
Good luck with your project.

Thank you JD338, if the 165gr bullets don't shoot I will be going to 180gr bullets and H4350

IMGP4858 2.jpeg Here is the beginning of my work as I finish handloads and mounting my VX-3i 3.5-10x40mm CDS Riflescope (Duplex Reticle) with the DNZ one piece mount. Two bullets are handloads in increments to see which one is more accurate and two of the cartridges are factory ammo to give me some comparisons. Left to right is 165gr CORE - LOKT PSP, second from left is 165gr Sierra HPBT, third from left is 165gr Seirra Game Changer and fourth from left is the Federal 165gr FUSION. Will be next week at the range due to work and weather. Will be adding in the next load group 165gr Partition and 165gr LRAB

Scoped and ready to go for load work next week and have added the 180gr Nosler Ballistic Tip with H4350

The three handloads I will test tomorrow at the range from left to right is the 165gr Sierra Game Changer, the 180gr Nosler Ballistic Tip and the 165gr Sierra HPBT. Tomorrow morning, we are not allowed to fire a round until 8am. It will be 80 degress at 8am and 84 by 9am. Will try to do as much work as I can because after 9am, it does not take it long to shoot up into the 90s. Will have to do my load work over a few mornings unless I get really lucky tomorrow morning, but got to go and try.

Well got a call and had to be at work by 8am so no range work today.

Ok, I went this morning and the humidity was awful. Got it sighted in and then started with my three different loads using the 180gr Ballistic tip and 53.6grs H4350 gave me the best accuracy and velocity (2711fps) which you will see the group in the photo below. Started to work with the 165gr loads and the sky opened up with a thunder storm. Will have to find a time to go back and work with those loads, but everything is looking good for a semi auto 7400. I will be going to also do 2/10 increments to make sure on accuracy. In the Auto I do like 180grain bullets in a 30/06 and the recoil is not a problem at all in the auto. We will see after the tropical storm Barry makes up its mind and moves out of our area.

Thank you Dan. I had to remount my scope, the DNZ mount was too low. I ran out of elevation clicks on my scope and could only sight my scope in at 1 1/2" high at 100yds. Where you see the group on my target is 1 1/2" high and I only had 2 clicks of elevation left. So I mounted my scope using a Leupold base and high rings and now have plenty of elevation.

I looked at that Quickload data for the 165 gr. bullet and it looks kind of hot to me. For many years my go to load for the 30-06 was 49.0 of H4895 and the 150 gr. Sierra SPFB, now called the Pro-Hunter. I used that load in a 1903A3 Springfield sporter and a JC Higgins M50 based on an FN Mauser. The load was accurate and killed deer nicely although was hard on eating meat. Never had a problem with it. Around 19772 or so I switched to the 180 gr. Sierra Pro-Hunter so I wouldn't lose as much meat. In 1973 I switched to a Remington M660 in .308 as the two 06's were too damn heavy up around the 9,000 foot MSL level. Started with the 150 gr. Sierra again and went ot a 180 round nose after that by Sierra.

About late 1981 or early 1982 I got my first chronograph. I was always curious as to what that 49.0/H4895 would do so loaded up a box. I no longer has the 190A3 but I did still have the Higgins M50. The first shot locked the bolt up nice and tight. This was the same load I used for more years than I claim to count shooting and hunting. After I got the bolt open the primer was very flat and the ejector mark very prominent. I did try one more round with the same result so quit while I was ahead. When I got home I broke down each cartridge and weighed the charges. They were spot one + or - 0.10 gr. I weighed the bullets and they too were the proper weight. :?: Even the brass was the same, Winchester. About the only thing I can figure is current H4895 just might be a bit faster burning lot than the H 4895 I used before. I do know the load was fine in the M50 before. I did a work up after that and 48.0 was OK but somehow I was not comfortable with it. I'll stick to H4350 in that rifle.

Thank you PJGunner, and appreciate you taking the time to share your experiences. I found your story interesting and enjoyed reading it. Thanks again for the post.

Will be going Thursday Morning for my final set of groups to determine the most accurate load for the 180gr Ballistic Tip and also record its velocity.

Hunting load ready and loaded for my Rem 7400 30/06 using the 180gr Balistic Tip. Here is my final load and with tweak COAL. Using the 180gr ballistic tip with 53.6grs of H4350 that I worked up too and do not have any pressure signs, 2718fps on average out of a 22" barrel set at 2 1/5" high at 100yds. For a 7400 this one is shooting good and will be fun to use hunting dear and black bear.
