My baby brother is currently mired in med. school back in Kentucky, but broke away for a couple days to come see the family for Christmas. We ran out to look for a coyote this morning, missed one, then shot a little steel.

He hasn't done much centerfire rifle shooting.... so I thought it would be interesting to just turn him loose.

We fired one round at 100 yards to 'check zero'.... that's the orange dot....

Then he cranked the turret to 650... and he put 5 rounds in 7" on the target....

Backed up to 900, spun the dial to "9".... and he put 2 more on it about 5" apart....

I then spotted what must have been the worlds dumbest prairie dog at a shade over 300.... lets just say the last thing on that dog's mind.... was a 162 Amax....

It really is fun to watch a guys face when they pound steel at 1/2 mile plus.....

The good Doctor....

Good for you, SD. Yeah, I don't doubt that your brother appreciated the break. Consequently, how did he manage to get away? They didn't allow us to leave forty years ago. I was always fortunate enough to work through every holiday. :?

He's actually in an MD/PhD program at UK.... I reckon they've gotten soft on them over the last fourt.... ahhhhem.... ten years....

What area of research (not intending to turn the thread tooooooooo far afield)

Mostly physics based medical research.... imaging... etc. Heck Mike.... he's about 9 times smarter than me... so even if I got a good explanation.... I'm not sure I could reiterate it.

Ah, just know there is a fascinating potential arising from that field. Medical imaging has certainly made enormous strides since we were placing a patient's head between two giant magnets (the first efforts at magnetic resonance). I remember how fascinated I was by the relaxation of water molecules on phosphofructokinase. Fascinating stuff. What was imaged then is sure crude by today's standards. Your brother is to be complimented.

Awesome buddy.

Some mighty fine shooting there.

It's made huge strides in the almost-20 years since I graduated.

When I was in med school radiology was a no-growth field and anesthesiology was waning. I looked at both, but decided against them. Now they're both gangbusters and no one wants Family Medicine (my field) any more.

Awesome shooting on your brothers part SD!

I'll leave the Doctor talk, well, to you doctors!

Yeah, specialties wax and wane. If the powers that be would cease attempting to manipulate who goes into which specialty, it would be somewhat more steady for all specialties.

The clamor is that we need "more primary care" doctors, yet we incentivize the specialists by paying them 2-5 times as much. When you graduate med school with (in todays money) $100k in debt would you go for an extra year or two of residency to double your income or more? Of course, which is why primary care still suffers.

Excellent point. Also, young physicians tend to have priorities of time for self and family that was neglected a generation ago. I personally comment such attitudes, believing them to be healthy.

Family is the primary reason my brother is looking at research.... rather than practicing medicine. Take a close look at his attire.... and I bet you can surmise why. He handled a very full school load and a D1 athletic scholarship.... a young marraige, the birth and subsequent complications with their first child (who is great now).... and a year working for me on roofs in Denver. He is actually enjoying the piece and quiet 80 hour a week workload at school now.

He would love to practice in a family/pediatric environment.... but regulations/insurance/etc..... are more than he is willing to roll the dice on.

The regulations and insurance aren't that bad. Heck I heard about how "bad" it was 25 years ago when I was in training. You just have to realize that change is the only constant in this business.

We have the largest practice in town, and are self-owned. Nothing, let me repeat nothing beats being your own boss. I am thankful every day that I have the job that I have, despite its stress at times. I would not work for a hospital or other organization ever even though I've had the chance.

Oh, and we do it better than anyone else in town too.

I'm my own boss..... don't reckon I'll ever work for anyone again if I can help it.

He's a little concerned about the coffee colored gentleman in the White House too.... seems that guy has some different ideas about how health care should be run/funded.
