I can't get a group with the 150 grain ABLR in my Model 70 Super Grade and am up for suggestions. It is a factory 1-10 barrel. I am shooting new Nosler brass, with WLR primers, and have tried everything from 55-57 grains of H4831SC and am .010 off the lands with a COAL of 3.370. Maybe I need to start working down the charge but it seems like I'd be giving up too much in velocity. This gun will shoot the factory 130 grain Winchester Power Points at a little over 1.4" and my smallest group was 1.59". I have some IMR 4831 I can try and would love to try 19 or 22 but there is none anywhere. Has anyone found that these bullets like more jump than .010?
I appreciate any suggestions.

I haven't tried them in my 270 win, but what I keep hearing is they need some jump for some reason. 0.010" off the lands might be too tight for them.

But again, I don't shoot them. the 140 grn AB does great for me, and they already have very high BC (plus they're like $15/box cheaper).

Try going down to 3.340 COAL and work out from there? Sometimes heavier bullets need more headspace to the lands.

I have 3 M70's...and 2 of them prefer bullets seated to 3.34" (both 30-06's), the other one, a 270...I haven't shot it yet so I don't know yet what that one likes.

I know bullet ogives vary and that seated to 3.34" OAL doesn't really mean squat in relation to jump to the lands...but both of those 30-06's shoot Nosler 168 BT's, Berger 175 VLD's, and Nosler CC 168's their best when loaded to ~3.34" (give or take a little for the varying tip lengths)...just a trend I've noticed in my model 70's, or at least in the ones I've shot....may be something useful, may not...but it seems to be a trend based on my sample of 2, lol.

I know the ABLR's have secant ogives...but so do the Bergers...

They need some jump try at .050" off the lands and go in .020-.030" increments until something stands out. Then you can fine tune them.

I use .110 bullet jump and 55 grains of IMR4831. My coal is 3.410. This particular load shoots real well for me. I did try H4831sc as well. Groups looked about like yours with H4831sc. I would certainly give IMR4831 a try. I used the same seating depth with both powders. No other changes were made. In my case the powder choice was a huge factor. IMR won the battle with this bullet. It would not surprise me if adding more bullet jump helps you out as well. I use a lot of jump in my .270. About .050 in my 06 and .015 in my 300 mag. Let the rifle show what it likes. If the dang rain stops any time soon I,m acually all loaded up with 7828 and ready to shoot. I also have some 130 E-TIPS ready to test with IMR-4350. Rain Rain go away. Good luck to ya Palouser. hope ya get dialed in soon.

Thanks! This load was for the 150 ABLR?

I'm having the same problem with the 7MM 150 gr. ABLR. So far my 7x57's do not seem to like that one and my .280 Rem. get very good velocity but lousy accuracy. :( I'm going to try playing with seating depth. Two of my 7x57's have proven to be very accurate which is why I find them not shooting the ABLR well puzzling. What little work I've done with the .280 has shown me it has a lot of potential in the accuracy department, just not with the ABLR. :?:

I am running the 150ABLR in my 270WSM and have to push them WAY back to make them group. Once you get to .075" or so, you should start seeing them tighten up. I have NOT found the ABLR to like being seated close to the rifling. Just in my two WSM's thus far, but as I went back, they started getting really decent. Still not entirely finished, but I think you might do better backing them up.

This is where I finished up. This was shot at 200 yards.. I need to get it back out and try a few more and see where I am at, but I believe I am close, but again, I had to back them up quite alot..

Nice shooting! That is impressive! Thanks for the heads up! I will try pushing them way back in.

Thank you. It took me a bit to come to the shorter lengths as I thought they would shoot better up closer, but it wasn't what I saw. Should have some rifle time with those two shortly, wanna see what I can do to really get them shooting.

What was your COAL?

Mine was 2.865" but it is a 270WSM. I wanna say it is about .125" off the rifling right now. I will tweak them a little and see what pans out, but I would try backing them out in .030" increments. I bet something will pop out at you. I couldn't get anything to look real good until I started getting deep.

Oh yeah I forgot about the short mag part. You had me a little worried with your seating depth that you had written on your target. I didn't know how I could get a bullet that far in. Thanks Scotty!

No worries. Hope you get some better results.

I know I had some groups that looked decent up close, but they wouldn't repeat. Now they are fairly consistent, but I believe a small amount of tweaking might really turn a corner.

In my .280, I was running the 150 grain ABLR 0.050 inches off the lands. I suspect that it would tighten up some more with a longer jump to the lands. I was pushed for time last fall, however, needing the load for elk and mule deer. It worked quite well. I used a stiff charge of N560.
