Accubond Performance

I've killed quite a few elk with the 140AB in a .270 Win at around 3000fps. I don't recall a single bullet not passing through and the insides have always been pudding. I think the exit hole averages around two inches. They typically drop right there and then, as if struck by a lightning bolt.

David,
I'm with you and have been bugging Mason and Shawn for a while now on those 6mm ABs. I keep hoping that the squeaky wheel will get some oil. That said, if those E-tips will shoot for me, I might just call it good after seeing how they worked out for you and your boys. Total pass through, two broken shoulders, lung pudding, and DRT at 300+ yds is a win in my book. I'll be loading some up just as soon as I can find 'em.

Joe that E-tip and what it has done in my boys 6mm has been pretty amazing. That elk, deer, and antelope he shot with it all were done instantly. By wound examination it was obvious it was expanding well and doing what it should. Songdog is right and I should just shut the heck up and keep loading those E-tips and be happy, very happy. Their BC is not bad either as its about .409 if I remember correctly.
Songdog I admit the error of my ways and I will not say another word on this matter!

As for the 6mm 90 grain AccUnicorns.... I'll pass on the purchase of my obligatory 'new bullet' box or two. Now, if Nosler decides to build a 100-110 NBT for the 6mm's, with a BC of .470-.510.... you'll all be in line behind me!

I see a big fight at the front of that line

No.... no.... no error there. Just wondering what kind of gain in performance you're looking for over the E-Tip.... especially out of a 6mmm.

A couple years ago I had a "reloading bench garage sale".... I found something like 20 partial (and a couple unopened) boxes of .25 cal bullets.... most still had the price tags on them. It just about made me cry when I realized there was enough money to buy a new rifle, sitting there in bullets.... most of which I'd never shoot at a critter or paper.... I just "bought them to try them".... no more man, no more.

Solitude - welcome to the forum. As you can see, this group of rifle/hunting nut jobs gets easily sidetracked... Guilty of it myself...

Re your bullet not exiting - well heck - sometimes that happens with all manner of bullets & beasts. As I recall every Nosler I've shot into a game animal exited, but sometimes I use a more fragile bullet like a Sierra or even a Berger, and they haven't generally exited, yet I still had game down, quickly.

With your pronghorn, I'd just note the performance, and go shoot another half dozen or so before coming to a conclusion. BTW, congrats on the pronghorn!

Regards, Guy

Actually.... I'm at the front of the line already. I have some on order from Midway.... found them in their catalog right next to the B29 brass/bullets.....

As a note.... I can't figure out why Nosler can't take the hint. I'm at Sportsmans just about every Saturday morning before they open (it's about 2 miles from my house) so I can snatch a box or two of 105 Amaxes before they sell out by Saturday afternoon. They go through about 10-15 boxes a week. 7 weeks ago.... on a whim... I took a small marker and put a dot on the boxes of several other bullet maker's 90-100 grain bullets. All the Noslers are still there.... yep, the 90 NBTs, the 95 NBTs, the partitions, all of them... plus more that they got in. According to my makeshift survey.... the AM outsells the 6mm Hunting BTs about.... well, 100 to 1? Small sample I'm sure.... but an example of one none the less. Furthermore, the 95 NBT is pert'near $20 for a box of 50.... the AM is $20 per 100. To make matters worse.... Nosler now has (or will have at the ACTUAL release of the 90 AccUnicorn) 3 big game bullets of 90 grains... all with plastic tips.... all of roughly the same inflated BC.... yet they can't build a bullet that the masses are truly looking for.

I've been looking for a 7mm 160 grain NBT for 20 years.... but Nosler wouldn't make one "because they would be too long". Now, all of a sudden.... there's a 160 AccuBond? Why? that's what the public demanded.... and most modern 7mm rifles are made to shoot them. Same thing with the 6's.... I'd love to hear from the folks at Nosler why they insist they need an EIGHTH hunting bullet weighing between 85-100 grains... that's right EIGHT OF THEM. WHY?

SJB358--looks like '05 was a very good year for you.

It was a great year for the 270WSM Mike.

07 was a great year for the Whelen as well with an elk and bear, plus a couple of Eastern deer.

Thank you Mike.

Your right SD, the Amax's are some pretty good bullets, and should Nosler come to the table with a 105-110 grain bullet they would have something that may make the 25-06's out there a little nervous out of the bigger 6mm's!

Scotty both of those animals are beautiful. You look a little wet and tired in the picture with your bull, and the fun has just begun! Oh my but the kind of fun I like. You need to peek at the Eagle Scotty, I'm still trying to squeak in as a "carry on", and I drove the bus over you and did a flaming burn-out, well not quite that bad....

The bull looks like he's pretty good sized. Did you have a guess as to what he weighed? Were you able to get to him or was he out in parts and pieces?

Nah, that bull came out of a nasty hole deboned! It was straight up for 1400-1600ft to a horsetrail and a few 4-5 miles back to camp. Your right though, I was smoked before the knife ever hit the flesh!

I will check it out... I can always depend on my MT mates to get me while I am connectivity deprived!

So far I've only taken two elk with Accubonds.

The first was 2010. 150g from a .30-06, 262 yards, dropping the cow like a rock. Base of neck without an exit but I didnt't recover the bullet. The pic is from the entrance side.

The second was 2011, 225g from a .338 WM, 265 yards. My first shot was from a bad rest and I screwed it up, hitting above the spine and taking out a section of backstrap before exiting. After adjusting to a more solid shooting position, the next hit right where aimed, broadside just behind the leg. My philosophy is "Shoot until they are down - and stay that way", so, because the cow was still walking, I put another within an in ch or so of the previous shot. At least one exited and I didn't find the other, could have gone out the same hole.

Here is a pic with the hide off. You can see where my first shot went - not good - and where the remaining two went.
