Ok, I may not be an olympic shooter, but I am no slouch as well load some good reloads, but what is the trick to getting Accubonds to shoot? I want to use them for the high BC, but can't get them to shoot for beans.I have tried in .30-06 and 300WM with less than great results. So I am now thinking maybe there is a trick? Thanks :?

I was lucky when I started using some 165 gr. Accubonds in my 30-06. I had a load with IMR4350 and the 165 gr. Partition that worked very well already so I thought what the heck, I'll leave the seating die set as is so it contacts the AccuBond at the same place on the bullet curve as it does on the Partition and try a few. They shoot equally as well, not better I would say, but just as good. This Ruger #1B will do 1/2" groups at 100 yards if I do my part, and it does it very regularly. I have not checked to see how close I am to the lands, but I think I am pretty close as they are seated out there a ways. This probably is not much help. What powder, case, and primer are you using?

There is no trick; AccuBonds, like any premium bullet, will shoot better in some rifles than in others. They will generally deliver accurate accuracy at a particular COAL to maximize harmonics in your rifle. Finding that node is the issue of working through the mechanics. I focus on finding a load that delivers good standard deviations (less than one percent) and then adjust seating depth to find the node that delivers the best accuracy.

I have tried H4350, IMR4350, and RL22 with no luck in the 06. I don't think I could get to the lands before having feeding issues, but have taken them to 3.34 OAL. Maybe I need to go longer still? The NP's shoot great?

You may find that seating them deeper gives you the accuracy you are seeking. Some rifles like a long jump to the lands. Focus on consistency in velocity and work from the known to the unknown.

Try seating .015" off the lands if they will fit the magazine.

What kind of rifle is it?

3.34" isn't too long, not at all. Load 'em where the rifle wants. I have but limited experience with the AccuBond, but in one rifle I use them extensively, one reason being great accuracy. I find that they shoot much like Ballistic Tips, which isn't too surprising.

On the other hand... If the Partitions shoot great for you... Why mess with success? Load up a bunch of your great shooting Partitions and go fill tags.

H4350 and 165 gr Nosler Partitions, Ballistic Tips or Solid Base bullets is a favorite combo of mine for good velocity and accuracy.

Here's a link to an excellent short article on the .30-06, not necessarily on the AccuBond. Some good stuff here though:

No flies on the Partition, it is more like the challenge because I can't get the darn things to shoot. I have some .308's loaded since these guns would clover with dirt and a rock for a bullet. That is a good article and saved in my favorites!

If you can't get the AB's to shoot, try the 180gr BT's.
You many also try a differnet style of powder....
No luck with a stick powder, try a ball powder ect...

You did not say what weight bullet you are using but if it is 150 gr try 51.2 grs IMR 4064. This load has shot under MOA in every 30-06 I have ever tried it in with many different bullet makes. The only experience with Accubonds I have had is with the 130 gr in my 264 Win mag. They really shoot 20 thousands off the lands with 66.5 grs Retumbo and CCI 250 primers in WW cases. I get 3350 fps from the 27 3/4" barrel and man do they shoot flat. Much flatter than the numbers indicate they should. I sight in 3" high at 100 yards and at 300 yards I am still 2" high. They really do a great job at these high velocities on deer even up close. I have only recovered one bullet and it was shot into a buck at 111 yards and the bullet still had be going over 3100 fps and as the buck quartered toward me I placed the bullet on the front edge of it's left shoulder. He dropped on his butt and fell over dead. While cutting up the meat I found that the bullet had smashed the left shoulder traveled through the vitals making soup of them and was found in the right ham against the ball joint. It was a text book mushroom and recovered weight was 87 grs. That is what I call a great bullet.

I am trying 165 and 180's for all .30 cals. 150's are too light IMO, but thank you. Where are you in TN? my parents have a farm in Crossville. Thanks! I am going to try them Loooooooooonnnnng and if not Partitions shoot, leave well enough alone. I am just frustrated that I cannot get them to shoot well in any of my rifles. 3-30-06's and 1-300-WM.

I have found ABs shot best in 3 of my rifles (257Bob, 270Win, 30-06) when seated very deep. Very deep. In the .270Win the OAL is less than SAAMI. In the 25-06, they shot best when .012 off lands.

Generally, some jump has been the key for me with Accubonds. That said, my .30-06 just won't shoot the 165s. I tried several powders, primers, and the gamut of seating depths to no avail. I went back to my load with a 165 Hornady Interlock and the accuracy was there. Some rifles just don't like some bullets.

Hunting1,
You didn't state what rifles you are shooting Remington,Winchester etc. I have a 30-06 in a Remington 700 gun. I shoot the 165 Ballistic Tip and A.B. My load is 59.0- H4350 using CCI250 Mag Primer. I have the bullet seated the length of the magazine tongue, it just clears in the magazine. This load produces excellent groups. I would suggest starting to seat your load that way then continue to seat deeper from there. I got good groups with a lower powder charge as well.

Anything can cause a gun to shoot lousy groups besides seating depth. Are the barrels clean on all your guns?

Don

Thanks guys, will try deep and long and then just move on. The 06's are Rem 700's and the 300wm is a Savage. 2-of 3 will shoot dime size groups with Partitions and yes some guns are better than others. Just wondering if others had tricks concerning Accubonds is all. 59-grains of H4350 is a sweet load! 58 is where accuracy drops for me.

Regards,

Same here, I have had great luck seating the AB's further off the lands, than up close. I know some get them pretty close, but my luck has been further off the lands, than closer in..

Good luck.
