With a simple red dot on an AR15, what kind of groups would you be happy with??? I am able to get .75-1" groups at 50 yards. For a plinking/truck gun, I think that is decent. Would you try for better, or load up a few hundred and blast away?

Actually - train. Train smart. You've got plenty of accuracy. Go to the range with a good coach who knows how to make the AR-15 sing. There is so very much more to riflery than just shooting tight groups.

Learn to quickly get that thing into action. How to change mags and clear malfunctions rapidly. How to get a bad guy to let go of your rifle. How to shoot quickly and accurately from muzzle-scorch to 300 yards without adjusting your sight at all...

Might need more than a few hundred rounds, but it's going to be fun, and useful.

That's better than some can do with 16x scope!

What size of red dot is it? 1 moa, 4 moa? Either way, .75 at 50 is good.

4" at 100, 2" coverage at 50... .75 is darn good. I'd say any group under 2" would be good.

I shoot a lot of iron sighted military rifles and I've found the accuracy ceiling to be around 2" at 100 yards 5 shot groups. You'll occasionally get one tighter, but those are the outliers.

For example, both my RRA national match AR and my 6.5 Swedish M96 built in 1915 will shoot slightly under 2" with their favorite loads. With 9x optics, the AR shrinks to 1/2-3/4 MOA.You're probably dealing with a similar ceiling with your red dot so I'd say load 'em up and shoot.

2-3 MOA is more than enough to hit a man sized target within the maximum effective range of the rifle within a reasonable number of shots.

The important thing to remember about battle rifles is that they were designed and manufactured knowing that the man operating that weapon would not be the only one shooting. Price point and reliability are more important than MOA groups.

Understanding that, shoot what gives you reasonable accuracy for the least amount of effort. Spending hours prepping cases, individually weighing charges, measuring runout and practicing off a bench isn't going to get you where you should be with that rifle. You could hit just about any target with an AR and a red dot if you can take the error out of your shooting positions.

My work rifle will shoot 1" at 100 with the cheap FMJ we train with and iron sights.....I can usually hold about 1.5" with the aimpoint PRO at the same distance.

When working with my AR it seems that loading just a couple hundred rounds is a wast of time. I usually load a thousand rounds at a time. LOL That thing is an ammo eater when I get to having fun. I was taught a long time ago that you can only shoot as well as you can see as to group size. Two people can shoot the same rifle and shoot different size groups simply because they see the sights differently.
