I have a Rem. M700 from the early 1970's that needs a new barrel. It is chambered in 22-250. Is the action length for a 22-250 the same as for other short action cartridges such as a .308 Win? Do I have the option to rebarrel this rifle to another cartridge such as .243 Win, .308 Win, or 338 Fed with the same head diameter?

Dan

Yes, thankfully with having the .22-250, you have the same bolt face that you would have for the short action cartridges based on the .308 case. The rim diameter is min .473, or should be really close!

Yup - should be a real simple operation to screw on a new barrel in your choice of the standard short-action cartridges.

Yes, it's a short action. JD338

Yea! Now, decisions, decisions. I don't really hunt woodchucks anymore. The coyotes pretty much took care of that. So, I don't need a 22-250 again.

This would be just a "fun gun" since it is a right handed action and I shoot left-handed now. It could also be a "guest gun". Let's see, I already have dies for 22-250 Rem., 260 Rem., 7mm-08 Rem, and 308 Win. However, a 338 Federal would be lot of fun to try out.

I currently have left-handed rifles chambered in 270 Win., 7mm RM, and 300 WSM for serious deer and elk hunting.

Suggestions for a right-handed short action "fun" round?

The diameter on the 22-250 is based in the Savage 250.

I looked in the Hornady X manual.

All these cases have the same diameter base: 22-250, 243, 250sav, 257 Bob, 7mm08, 308, 338 fed.

However there are two groups of rim thicknesses.
.049” is 22-250, 250 sav 257 Bob 300 sav

Vs .054” 243, 7-08, 308, 338fed.

I don’t know if the extractor or bolt will care about .005”

Maybe someone with hands on gunsmithing knowledge can help out?

Since it would take any cartridge based on the early Savage rounds like a duck to water, my suggestion is go with a 6.5 Creedmoor, since the cases are modified .250, or .300 Savage cases.
There's a lot of components for the 6.5 Creed out there now.

Go with the 260. You have dies. Also it would be different from anything you have plus it's a fun cartridge that does everything a Creedmore can. One of my grandsons has one and it does very well on deer with minimal recoil. Dan.

Per the Hornady manual,

The Creedmoor and 260 are similar in spec to the 308.

Rim is 0.054” vs 0.049” on the 22-250.

Those are really cool suggestions to add to the mix..
6, 6.5 CM and 260 Rem.

I still don’t know if the 0.005” matters...

Just checked the RCBS shell holder reference.. all the cartridges in this thread take the same shell holder #3.

I'm not a gunsmith but I play one sometimes in my gun room. Ha. On a push feed like a M700 it wont matter a bit. Lot more slop there than .005. Doubt it would matter any on a claw extractor either when it's that close.

Thanks for all the feedback. I love having enablers around. Keep it up. (y)

Umm. New idea. Rebore to 338 Federal? Would that make sense? Would the barrel be thick enough?

If not at the muzzle it would somewhere along the barrel. It seems the expansion ratio with bigger bores doesn't lose as much velocity as the smaller bores. My 358 finished at 21", balances nicely, & comes real close to book loads with 24" barrels.

If it’s the Remington standard sporter contour then yes, .338 bore is doable for a rebore. I have embarked on the .338 Federal journey recently. It’s a promising cartridge. Also it’s obscure enough that components are around.

The 338 Federal is definitely a sleeper. Mine has only take one moose, but it worked quite well on that critter when shot at ~125 yards. Sweet little cartridge. On the other hand, nothing wrong with the 308 Win.

I'd lean toward a 1/4 bore, 250 Savage or 257 Roberts. Why? I don't have anything in .25 caliber and new projects are always fun and of course I like short actions. My 2 cents anyway.

i looked at the Hornady bullet selection in 338, and really only 1 was appropriate for 338 Federal. It was an FTX for 1600-2600 FPS expansion. All the other bullets were 2500-3200fps for active expansion. Contrast that with 358 and there are a ton of Hornady bullets for modest velocities.... I was wondering for 338Federal, what bullets are people using?

210 Nosler Partition, 160-185 Barnes TTSX, 210 Woodleigh weldcore for .338 Federal, 200 Federal trophy copper, 200 Nosler ballistic tip, 215 Sierra game king, various selections from Hawk, and one or two of the Hammers. All good for normal/reasonable hunting distances.
